BAFTAs 2006: quick summary of winners
Unsurprisingly, as far as we’re concerned, Brokeback Mountain was the big winner at the BAFTAs this evening. It won best film, best adapted screenplay, best direction and Jake Gyllenhaal got best actor in a supporting role.
Crash and Memoirs of a Geisha got two awards each: Crash for original screenplay and best supporting actress for Thandie Newton, and Memoirs.. picked up awards for film music and cinematography.
Philip Seymour Hoffman got a nod for best actor for Capote and we’re chuffed that Reese Witherspoon won the best actress in a leading role award because we loved Walk the Line. Walk the Line also got an award for sound too.
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit got the award for best British film - which, in our eyes, says something about the British film industry at the moment and we’re not sure if it’s a good thing…
Anyway, that’s just the main winners - you can read a full list at news.bbc.co.uk - and we’ll write more in the morning about all the gossip and fashion news from the evening (Catrina’s initial thoughts: “oh so much better than the BAFTAs. oh so much better. except Thandie Newton.”).

Tell me, what does the “B” in BAFTA stand for again? Some people may need reminding in view of the list of winners (and their nationalities).

Finally a big win for Jake Gyllenhaal! Brokeback Mountain is really his movie - well Heath Ledger does a good job, but I just can’t stand Ennis.

Why can’t you stand Ennis? He is so troubled, but he really does love Jack. I think his problems are all about how he was raised. Also, I think he has a better understanding of what the social implications are for he and Jack concerning their love. Jack, even though he has been warned by Ennis, does not understand that in the west (Texas and Wyoming) being gay can get one killed.

I think ‘B’ may be for British ???? but I am guessing!
I loved Jake’s performance and really became a huge fan after that.
