Oscars 2006: The big winners

So, it’s all over for another year!
We’ll post more about the gossip from the evening - and Cat will do another one of her wonderful red carpet commentaries about the swishy fashion - later in the day but for now, here’s a list of the big winners and our initial thoughts:
Best Film
- Brokeback Mountain
- Capote
- Crash
- Good Night, and Good Luck
- Munich
And the winner was … Crash
Our thoughts: to be honest, we don’t remember much about Crash. We saw it back in the early autumn sometime and it didn’t really stand out - guess it did for the Academy voters though. We’ll have to revisit it once we get over the shock that Brokeback Mountain or Good Night, and Good Luck didn’t win…
Best Direction
- Brokeback Mountain
- Capote
- Crash
- Good Night, and Good Luck
- Munich
And the winner was … Brokeback Mountain
Our thoughts: Ang Lee is a genius. Nothing more needs to be said.

Best Actor
- Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
- Terrence Howard - Hustle and Flow
- Heath Ledger - Brokeback Mountain
- Joaquin Phoenix - Walk the Line
- David Strathairan - Good Night, and Good Luck
And the winner was … Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
Our thoughts: We’d have gone for Heath or Joaquin just because, but Philip really deserved to win it. His performance was amazing. So full of character without tipping into caricature. Excellent.
Best Supporting Actor
- George Clooney - Syriana
- Matt Dillon - Crash
- Paul Giametti - Cinderella Man
- Jake Gyllenhaal - Brokeback Mountain
- William Hurt - A History of Violence
And the winner was … George Clooney - Syriana
Our thoughts: Woo! He at least got one of the ones he was up for. He makes such good choices in films these days that it’s nice he’s been rewarded for it.

Best Actress
- Judi Dench - Mrs Henderson Presents
- Felicity Huffman - TransAmerica
- Keira Knightley - Pride and Prejudice
- Charlize Theron - North Country
- Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line
And the winner was … Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line
Our thoughts: Hurrah! We’ve liked Reese as an actress since she was pulling funny faces in Election and Cruel Intentions so it’s nice to see that she’s getting some proper recognition at last.
Best Supporting Actress
- Amy Adams - Junebug
- Catherine Keener - Capote
- Frances McDormand - North Country
- Rachel Weisz - The Constant Gardener
- Michelle Williams - Brokeback Mountain
And the winner was … Rachel Weisz - The Constant Gardener
Our thoughts: Love, love, love this woman. No complaints whatsoever from these quarters. And she looked absolutely radiant too.

I thought Capote should have woon more - it really blow me away in terms of acting and scripting and everything.
I also think Frances McDormand should have got the suppoerting actreess one because she rocks in everything she does.
Needless to say, a lot of annoynace for me this morning.

I’m so glad that Keira didn’t win. I don’t see why everything things she so great, she did nothing original with the part, it was like acting by numbers.

Reese deserved to win - she was so sweet and beautiful in that role. I loved the bit when he was going through the withdrawal from the drugs and the dealer came but June’s family chased them off with shotguns.
She has such a lovely singing voice too - I don’t want her to become a pop star but I’d love to here her sing in something else someday.
Well done ReesE!!!

I think Joaquin Phoenix should have received an equal share of the Oscar. He did an incredible job and should have been recognized for his work.
