John Travolta signed up for Hairspray remake
John Travolta is set to star in his first musical in 30 years - and will be doing it in drag.
Hollywood newspaper Variety is reporting that John was the first choice for the role of Edna Turnblad in the remake of the cult 1980s movie, Hairspray - and he’s happily accepted.
The original film starred transvestite performer Divine as Edna, mother to Ricki Lake’s Tracy. The rest of the cast for the remake has yet to be confirmed but Queen Latifah has been slated for the role of civil rights activist Motormouth Maybelle.
Filming will begin in the autumn - possibly putting back Travolta’s rumoured appearance as JR Ewing in the film version of Dallas.
