Thandie Newton: “No one says I’m too slim” (except we do)
Thandie Newton’s dress at last night’s Empire Awards certainly didn’t do anything to improve her super-skinny look. It hung off her body shapelessly and her arms looked like twigs - we suspect the Empire Award she won for Best Actress would weigh more than she did…
Speaking to the Mirror, she said that no one ever accuses her of being too slim because “I keep getting pregnant.”
“So one day I’m slim and the next I have a bump. In the last two years my body has changed so much and breast feeding really helps you to lose weight as well.”
“I think the Hollywood size four is a bad thing. I don’t stick to any diets. I eat when I’m hungry. Thankfully I have my mother’s frame and I’ve always been slim.”
Um, Thandie? We do think you’re too slim at the moment. Please put some weight on before you snap in half under the weight of all your awards…

She’s no thinner than Keira or Naomi or the rest of the sexy female A-listers.
She’s about the right weight for her height, and she was super sexy in her recent Vogue pics.

JohnMiles: just because others are just as skinny doesn’t make her any healthier.
seeing her bones through her skin like that just isn’t right. unless she’s in the process of growing an exoskelton or something. is she growing an exoskeleton? is she? because that would be AWESOME.

Actually Dan, skinny isn’t unhealthy. It’s fat that’s usually a sign of ill health. In any case, I’ve seen several pics of her from the Empire Awards and one can’t see her bones with the exception of her clavicle - and that’s a sign of beauty that many designers value because it makes low cut gowns look great.
She is soooo gorgeous in real life - it’s unbelievable. And there are some great pics of her on IMDB.com

Dan, I think that Lisa is right - fat is an unhealthier state for the body to be in.
I’m a physician and I know that being ’skinny’ is not itself a sign of unhealthiness. If she were emaciated (i.e., too thin), her facial bones would be visible as well and that’s simply not the case.
Newton is thin but her arms and legs have a bit of muscular tone to them indicating that she is also fit. Simply put, she is thin-boned, and she is well within the proper weight for her height and bone structure.
What people seem to forget about weight is that it relates to one’s bone structure and height. So a medium boned person is going to have a different ideal weight range than a thin boned person.
The diseases of anorexia and bulimia occur when people who have a different bone structure try to match a weight that is not natural for them. As a result, they have to resort to tactics that often lead to eating disorders.
I’ve seen pictures of Newton pregnant, and she does not have an eating disorder. In fact, she seems to permit her body to increase to a healthy weight which is something that people with eating disorders can’t do.
Newton is able to maintain her weight because that her weight is natural for her body structure. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn who, even in her 50s and 60s, remained naturally skinny.
Since I live in a country where 75% of the population is overweight, and since being overweight is a significant contributor to other serious health risks like high blood pressure, diabetes, stoke, and heart attacks, I’m more concerned about the current trend in some publications to call some overweight personalities ‘healthy’.
Women like Charlotte Church, Kate Winslet, and Mariah Carey are clearly overweight by what looks to be between 20 - 50 lbs., and yet these women are being adopted as examples of ‘healthy’ weights when that is simply not true.
If you’re medium boned you won’t be as thin as Newton, but you shouldn’t be as heavy as any of the above mentioned people either. One medium boned woman who understood her ideal weight range and has maintained it is Christie Brinkley. Even as a model she understood that she was not going to be in the same weight range as the thin-boned runway models and so instead of forcing her body to be something that it was not, she accepted it and molded her career to fit her body. As a result, even after her pregnancies, Brinkley has maintained her weight because she was always maintained a healthy mentality about her weight.
Newton appears to have done the same thing. Even after her pregnancies, she’s back to the size that’s natural for her.

Sorry John but you are very wrong about those examples you referred to as overweight. You say you are a physician, I have to say I’m shocked at your attitude regarding what is a healthy weight. It was attitudes like yours that caused me to have a serious eating disorder and go from a size 12 down to a size 6. I think you should rethink what you consider healthy and even if those examples happen to be slightly overweight, ie 6-8lb overweight (certainly not 20lb - 50lb as you stated which is quite ridiculous, you obviously have no clue in this regard), this is actually not considered a major issues by most physicians as long as the person is healthy, eats well and exercises.

I saw thandie this week at the ScreenNation film and tv awards at the Hilton.(oct 06). and she definitely looks v.skinny… I agree with Dee that Charlotte Church and Kate Winslet are healthy, and not at all overweight as John Miles implies.. you also have to remember that the camera adds about 10lbs to a person’s appearence, so thandie might look ‘healthy’ in the picture but real life tells a different story.
For the record, I also met her mother at the screening for Crash in london… her mother is black, and certainly not skinny as thandie suggests….why dont these hollywood stars say it like it is!???? as for victoria beckham…. well…..

Message for Jon Miles:
Kate Winslet, Mariah Carey & Charlotte Church are 20- 50lbs overweight? (Between 1.4 stones and 3.5 stones overweight) Good God my friend! As a physician what exactly is it you specialise in?
I suggest you have your brain removed and a hamster and its wheel put in its place.
It is wild statements like that, that confuse young girls/woman as to what is deemed ‘normal’ in society.
Thandie Newton may class herself as a healthy weight, however I’m sure the increase of osteoporosis in the next 15 - 20 years will be testament to who was actually right.
