Ian McKellen annoyed by Jake Gyllenhaal’s kissing comments
Sir Ian McKellen has criticised Jake Gyllenhaal’s negative comments about kissing Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain.
Sir Ian was annoyed that Jake did not consider how his comments would be interpreted by the gay community.
“I got very upset when [Gyllenhaal] said it was the most terrifying job he’d ever had because it involved him kissing another man. Imagine how rude that is. Suppose I’d said the most appalling thing I ever to do was kiss Helen Mirren!”

Come on! Even if he said that he surely didn’t mean it that way… Do you know many men -gay or straight - who would have agreed to kiss another man and play gay at the age 24/25….? and even if he said that, all the other comments he made about this film (”he is so proud of it and loves it so much” and” it means so much to me socially as well as artistically” during the BAFTA ceremony ….and so and so forth…) so, at least, relate all this to Ian McKellen and let’s see if he has still the same opinion about Jake after that. Ask him if he would honestly have had accepted such a role as Jack Twist when HE was 25 ?

Wow!!! I’m a straight woman, but I’ve kissed another girl before. I can honestly say that I was not afraid of it in the least. However, I would be terrified doing it on camera in front of all those people, knowing in the back of my mind that millions of people would see that one moment. When I was a little younger I acted in dinner theaters. This one time I was “terrified” to have to kiss my best friend, who was a boy, on stage in front of a crowd. It wasn’t that I was disgusted by it, he was a cute boy for crying out loud, but it was foreign to me therefore it instilled fear in me. There is nothing wrong with being terrified to do something foreign to you. I think maybe that’s what Jake was getting at with his comment. And to think,.. I had such respect for Ian McKellen. It seems like such a trivial thing to raise hell about when animals are being beaten to death for their fur every day, and babies are starving to death this very minute, and so on!!! My best friend is a gay man, and he absolutely loves Brokeback Mountain, he adores Jake Gyllenhaal, and was not at all upset about that particular comment. Some people just need to learn to pick their battles a little more wisely.

With all due respects, Sir Ian, we all love Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger for having the guts to do what other actors, straight or gay, would not! And the results were spell-binding. They gave it their all; they give to us still through interviews. Jake made an honest remark. Please, as a senior talent, a respected actor, support these young men in encouraging them to take these risks as actors and to keep that humble honesty that I feel is part of their charm. I look forward to many more brilliant performances from them. The future is theirs!

It seems extremely trival to get annoyed with a comment like that. I think Sir Ian is just trying to get some attention. Or maybe he feels that since Jake is a straight man he must be making a ignorant statement about homosexuality. Come on, we all know what Jake is talking about when he said he was terrified about kissing Heath. If anyone see’s that statement as offensive than I wonder what else is being said that other people are getting offended by. Jake’s comment was innocent and for Ian to get mad about it is childish.
