Richard E Grant’s father threatened to shoot him as a boy

Richard E Grant has revealed his father tried to shoot him while in a drunken rage.

When he was 11 years old, Richard poured away a case of whiskey to stop his alcoholic dad from drinking it - but that just made his dad angry. He held a gun to Richard’s forehead.

“He said ‘I’m going to blow your brains out’ and chased me round the garden,” Richard recalled in Seven magazine.

Then he “turned the gun on himself and tried to kill himself. He was full of self-pity and remorse.”

Richard was able to forgive him though, knowing it was only the alcohol talking: “When he was sober he was a gentle man who loved me.”

A film, Wah-Wah, about Richard’s childhood in Swaziland is set to be released in June.
