Anne Hathaway convinced she’ll disappoint people in new role
Anne Hathaway is scared of the public reaction to her playing Jane Austen in a new biopic about the author.
Anne doesn’t believe she’s elegant or refined enough to play the English writer in Becoming Jane: “I’m even horrified that I’m playing Jane Austen! I’m like, ‘Really? Me? Kate Winslet isn’t available?’”
“Jane Austen’s been one of my favourite authors since I was 14 years old and I’ve always kind of felt a connection to her, so I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
“And I’m sure I couldn’t have disappointed more people.”
A direct descedent of Austen, actress Anna Chancellor has already complained about Hathaway’s casting: “In my mind, Anne Hathaway is just too pretty to play her. Jane was a very plain woman. Her beauty was in her brain. But that’s what Hollywood does.”

Though it would have been more ideal for a British actress to play the part, I feel that Anne Hathaway has the spark needed to play the role. I was skeptical at first, having just completed a PhD thesis on Jane Austen, and consequently being more critical, but after consideration and seeing Miss Hathaway’s humility and love for the author, I feel she will be wonderful in the role. I wish her the best of luck!

Hi, Maria
How interesting that you did your thesis on Jane! Can you share something about it? Would you perhaps be willing to share an excerpt of your work on the Austen List? (A web group interested in all things Jane, of course.)
I’d be very happy to hear from you, but as I don’t publish my email, please visit me on the web, and click my email link from any webpage.
Thanks much, and I hope to hear from you.

While I think Anne Hathaway is lovely and have enjoyed her performances, I really don’t think she is right to play Jane Austen. But then, we have to remember the brooha when Renee Z was cast as Bridget Jones and look how great she turned out to be. So let’s wait and see what happens shall we. Besides, with Ang Lee involved, the chances of it being dreadful are pretty slim.

I agree. We must wait and give Anne Hathaway the benfit of the doubt. Kate Winslet would have been perfect but I ‘m sure If Anne is a fan then she will do her best to do justice to the role. I disagree with Anna Chancelor’s comment that Jane Austen was plain. Any one can see from her simple portrait that she was pretty.

As Jane Austen had no children, I don’t understand how Anna Chandler can be her direct descendent.

She matches the ‘guesswork portrait’ on display at Bath. I do not see how Kate Winslet could have answered the description. Anyway, she’s an actress, isn’t she? So she ought to be able to work out a character. And, liking Jane Austen, she’ll probably do it with due application.

Becoming Jane will fail. She doesn’t do the accent well and she obviously doesn’t believe in herself to be able to do it from the get go. I think she lacks likability. In person I have met her on sever occassions and find her shockingly unattractive. This is a case in point of the camera loves this woman. Most actors are insecure and she embodies this trait to the extreme. I predict she’s the next big bust.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Sharon. Though Hathaway’s accent was less than perfect, she embodies Jane Austen quite well. Even her facial features match that of the portrait painted by Austen’s sister Cassandra. Hathaway’s thorough knowledge of Austen, displayed in her thesis work at Vassar and very apparent love for Austen’s work, fully transcends into her acting.
This movie was in no sense a flop, and has quickly become a favorite in my extensive movie library. Though the story a little far-fetched, the characters mirrored in Austen’s life from her books give the avid Jane Austen fan a delightful puzzle to piece together.
