Cheryl Tweedy and Ashley ColeCheryl Tweedy’s dad Gary pulled aside his new son-in-law footballer Ashley Cole at their wedding reception on Saturday to beg him not to transfer to an international team.

A guest revealed to the Mirror: “Gary got quite emotional and said that when Cheryl joined Girls Aloud it felt like he had lost his little girl. Gary then pleaded that if she and Ashley move abroad, it would be like losing her again.”

“Cheryl then appeared and they had an emotional hug.”

Earlier in the evening, Newcastle United supporter Gary had tried a different tactic to get Ashley to stay in the country. During his father-of-the-bride speech, he said: “When Cheryl was born I was holding this bundle of joy in my hands but now Ashley has come and made her the happiest woman in the world. Now I want him to make me the happiest man in the world by accepting this gift” then presented Ashley with a Newcastle United shirt with “Cole” already written on the back.

Gary then added: “Come on Ashley - make my dream come true. On second thoughts, you better give that to Cheryl to wear when she comes to see the Toon army play because she’s Cheryl Cole now.”

Cheryl and Ashley married on Friday after finding out that they couldn’t marry at their reception location of the Wrotham Park estate. Ashley presented Cheryl with a £150,000 wedding ring, to match her £50,000 engagement ring and her Girls Aloud bandmates served as her bridesmaids.
