Anna Nicole Smith has hired a private pathologist to carry out a second autopsy on her son Daniel Smith after the Bahamas coroner’s office labeled his death “suspicious” because the cause was still unclear.

After Daniel’s death a week ago, the coroner’s office performed an autopsy on Tuesday and ordered further analysis including a toxicology test, the results of which were expected on Friday but now are likely to be returned next week.

But forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht has told the Associated Press that he has been hired to examine Daniel’s body. Wecht carried out the post-mortem investigations in a number of high profile deaths including Elvis Presley and child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey.

The head coroner Linda Virgill said seeking a second opinion was not unusual and the second autopsy would be carried out at a public morgue in Nassau this weekend.

The assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Reginald Ferguson, revealed on Friday that there were no obvious signs of the death being a crime but it was too early to draw conclusions.

An inquest into Daniel’s death has been scheduled for next month with witnesses likely to include hospital staff, air stewards on Daniel’s flight to the country and Anna Nicole herself.
