Portia De Rossi: don’t do as I did with anorexia
Portia De Rossi is keen to stop other actresses following in her footsteps by developing an eating disorder.
Earlier this year, Portia admitted suffering from anorexia starring in Ally McBeal and wrote an article about the disease for People magazine this week.
She wrote: “This is a good opportunity for me to say, ‘Do as I say, not as I do,’ because I have firsthand experience with being caught up in the whole Hollywood body thing.”
“I would eat 300 calories a day - a lot of Jell-O and no-sugar everything, of course.”
“I was doing Pilates, weight-training, circuit training; over lunch I would run on a treadmill in my dressing room with a fan on my face so I wouldn’t sweat my makeup off.”
Portia dropped down to less than six stone (82 pounds) before she realised there was a problem: “I went back home to Australia, and my brother and mother said, ‘You’re doing to die.’ It really woke me up; I had to do something, or I would lose everything.”
“Now I never ever put restrictions on food. I don’t really regret much in life, but I will never get the time back I spent worrying what the scale said.”
