Madonna’s spokesperson has denied reports that the singer has adopted a baby in Malawi, despite claims to the contrary by a government spokesperson.

Adrina Michiela told Reuters on behalf of the Malawi government that Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie had selected a baby boy from a shortlist of 12: “She asked us to identify boys only, which we have done after visiting four orphanages in the capital Lilongwe.”

She added that Madonna had originally planned to adopt a girl but changed her mind two weeks ago.

However, Madonna’s rep Liz Rosenberg told Us Weekly that the reports are “completely inaccurate”: “I can confirm Madonna is in Malawi on a private visit.”

“She is building an orphanage and child care center and is involved in other initiatives geared toward helping children orphaned by AIDS thru the Raising Malawi organization.”

“She has not adopted a baby despite reports that she has.”

She added though that Madonna is not angry with the adoption rumours: “I think anything that brings attention to the country is fine with her, even if it’s information that’s not correct.”

“She wants people to pay attention to Malawi and to the one million children who don’t have parents.”
