Madonna’s spokesperson has denied Yohane Banda’s claims that he didn’t know the adoption of his son David would be permanent while Madonna herself has recorded an interview for the Oprah Winfrey show to explain her side of the story.

Liz Rosenberg told New York Daily News: “I can say with absolute certainty that Yohane was fully aware that Madonna and Guy were adopting David. Any reservations you are reading about in the media were, I’m sure, based on his being provoked by reporters.”

The director of the Ministry of Women and Child Development in Malawai, Penson Kilembe, also confirmed that the situation had been explained to Yohane: “we explained every detail, and Madonna herself explained her intentions in the face of the judge and in Banda’s presence. [Banda] was asked several times in court if he understood what was going on, and he said he did.”

Madonna recorded an interview with Oprah yesterday about her part in the controversial adoption.

Speaking over satellite from a London hotel, Madonna revealed how she first saw David being held by an eight year old girl in a documentary. He was suffering from malaria, pneumonia and TB when she first met him the orphanage but, according to an audience member, she said “she looked in his eyes and had an immediate connection”.

She also explained that she intends to take David back to Malawi - and to see his biological family - once or twice a year and that she would like to become a spokesperson for the country on the international stage.

The interview will be broadcast in the US today.
