Jason DonovanJason Donovan’s former personal assistant has revealed Jason turned to drugs after he split up from Kylie Minogue and his pop career ended.

Jason, who will star in the next series of reality show I’m a Celebrity… starting tomorrow, had a four year long relationship with Kylie before she finished with him and later called their romance, “a childhood relationship”.

After shooting to fame in Neighbours in 1988 playing Scott Robinson opposite Kylie Minogue’s Charlene, the couple both left the show to pursue pop careers. Jason sold 30million albums before sales slowed and he joined the West End cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

His personal assistant from the time, Jules Braconnier, told the People newspaper recently: “He couldn’t handle what was going on. He lost fame and he lost Kylie.”

“He took loads of cocaine because he couldn’t handle what was going on. It was escapism. He took three grams a day - can you imagine it?”

“I once went to pick him up for a show and he was lying there like he’d had a heart attack. He had obviously tried to get up and collapsed and hit his head and blood was everywhere. I got him awake, cleaned him up and got him in a car and took him to the show. You had to get him there or he got sued by the production company. So I got him there and said he had flu. He was signed off by the doctor. They were being kind - he was an addict.”

Branconnier added that things didn’t improve when Jason met new partner, Ange: “Ange adored him but he was so addled by drugs and his words were, ‘She’s not pretty enough - she’s no Kylie’.

“He was besotted with Kylie - he worshipped the ground she walked on. The way he put it was, ‘It’s hard to split up with someone when you’re so in love’. It took him a long time to get over it.”

But when Ange gave birth to Jason’s daughter Jemma in 2000, Braconnier insists he changed his life around: “Having a child made him realise how wonderful life was. He changed overnight and stopped doing drugs.”
