Eddie Murphy has confirmed that former Spice Girl Melanie Brown is pregnant but he’s not sure that the baby is his.

Eddie and Melanie started dating in June and by October, Mel was rumoured to be four months pregnant with his child, meaning that she would have conceived in the very early days of his relationship.

Mel flew back into the UK last week and remarked to a friend at the weekend that their relationship was going great, saying: “We’re in love and get on really well. All the children have met and get on too - it’s like a great big happy family. I can’t wait to spend Christmas with him and I can’t wait to have this baby.”

But the New York Dreamgirls premiere last night, Eddie was asked about whether he was happy about their forthcoming arrival and he told the reporter: “You’re being presumptuous, because we’re not together anymore. And I don’t know whose child that is, until it comes out and has a blood test. You shouldn’t jump to conclusions, sir.”

And as if that wasn’t enough of a sudden revelation, he attended the promotional event for the new film with film producer Tracey Edmonds, with Tracey telling People magazine they had been dating for “about a month and a half” and they are “very happy. We’re having fun.”

Eddie’s spokesperson refused to comment on the baby remarks or the news about the new romance, saying: “we do not comment on Mr Murphy’s personal life.”
