Golden Globes 2007: Red Carpet Commentary
Wow, what a riot of colour the Golden Globes turned out to be last night - and so many great dresses that I’m not going to bother wasting space with any more of an introduction!

Helen Mirren was a winner well before she scored her pair of acting awards - her dress was utterly gorgeous in shape and colour, and oh so flattering. My still Christmas-enhanced figure would kill for a dress half as flattering as that - let’s hope high street designers take note.

Vanessa Minnillo, Ashley Jensen and Evangeline Lilly also really rocked great shaped and coloured glamorous gowns: I was surprised by how much I liked the panelling on the latter - it could have gone badly wrong but it just works on her.

Friends Reese Witherspoon and Renee Zellweger kept the colour but went for kicky, shorter dresses rather than the full length gowns we saw on nearly everyone else. Reese’s new haircut looks great too - she’s looking so cute these days.

As well as the fab splashes of colour, there was a lot of white on the red carpet for a January award show. Heidi Klum went for lots of layers which looked great, if only a tad maternity dress-ish, while Kate Winslet showed off her lovely, definitely not pregnant, curves.

Also in white, Kyra Sedgwick and Teri Hatcher went for pseudo-Grecian numbers but, in my opinion, Kyra got the better deal. Plus, her face didn’t look quite a melty as Teri’s (did she give up the Botox too late to be saved?)

Sienna Miller’s golden bodice with white train helped bring some sparkles to the event - in case Beyonce Knowles didn’t bring enough. Both looked great - well, except for Sienna’s strange choice of hairstyle.

Angelina Jolie’s gown also had Grecian overtones but it was a strange choice of colour - as greys go, it could have been a lot worse but it could have been a lot better too. She did, though, have a great accessory on her arm and he goes a long, long way to redeeming matters.

Angelina’s hair was right on trend for the evening too - inspired perhaps by big nominees Dreamgirls and Bobby, there was a lot of 1960s shape to the hair. In addition to Angelina, Jennifers Lopez and Love Hewitt were backcombed and blown dry like nobody’s business.

Sheryl Crow’s hair looked a bit fried but both her and Salma Hayek rocked out the big curls - such a pleasant change from the hyper-straight styles of the last few years.

And from hair to makeup, Cameron Diaz seems to have been hitting the war paint a bit too much of late (if you saw the pictures from the Chanel event over the weekend, you’ll know what I mean). Her shiny lipstick at the Golden Globes looked to be slipping off her lips - not a good look (and don’t even get me started on her dress). And usually perfect Kate Winslet seemed to have gone a bit too dark - sure, it added colour to her pale colouring but it seemed a bit too forced for my liking.

Cate Blanchett got her make-up spot on - subtle but gorgeous - but such a shame about the dress. Most of those in black looked so uninspired compared to the luxurious colours and gowns seen elsewhere and the cut of her lacy number didn’t help at all.

Similarly, Penelope Cruz’s black dress was too fussy compared to the sleak, clean lines preferred by most of the other stars. Ditto Courteney Cox Arquette.

And Desperate Housewives Nicollette Sheridan and Felicity Huffman could have done better - Nicollette’s dress looked like a monochrome copy of Keira Knightley’s gown from last year’s Oscar and like with Keira, looks like she’s permanently bent at the knee. Felicity had a nice colour but the shape of the collar ruined it for me.

And speaking of shape, do both Jada Pinkett Smith and Seinfeld’s Julia Louis Dreyfus have square bodies? If not, they need to find less rectangular dresses in the future.
I also have to mention Rinko Kikuchi’s ever so fun pom-pom dress - on almost anyone else, that dress would have been Bjork’s swan dress all over again but on her, it looks awesome.
Do you think Katie Price's marriage to Alex Reid will last?
