Brit Awards 2007: stories from the night
- Amy Winehouse joked that she’d make sure her dad helped her celebrate picking up the Best British Female Artist award at last night’s Brits. Amy took her mum Janis and dad Mitch to the event and after picking up her award, she said: “My dad is on a mission to get drunk because he hardly ever drinks normally as he’s driving. But tonight he’s going to celebrate. The two of us are going to be joined at the hip. I’ll make sure he does plenty of partying!”
- Amy might have piped Jamelia to the Best British Female post but being nominated was thrill enough for the mother of two. She told the Mirror that she was worried about her career after disappointing sales of her last album ‘Walk With Me’: “Being nominated for a Brit Award meant so much to me. So I felt an enormous sense of relief about being nominated, it made me feel more secure. It was an enormous boost for my self-esteem and it showed me that despite everything that happened last year, the voting panel has judged me to be one of the top five female artists in this country and that is amazing.”
- Joss Stone gave a shout out to Robbie Williams when she awarded James Morrison with the Best British Male Artist award, saying: “Big love to Robbie Williams for going what he’s going through. He is strong and inspired.” Robbie’s former bandmates in Take That didn’t mention him when they picked up their Best Single award though - Jason Orange later told the Sun: “We didn’t thank Robbie because it is about his private situation. It’s not for us to comment. He’s going through a personal problem and we wish him the best - we love him.”
- Lily Allen was apparently not pleased that her no-Brit-awards premonition came true. Lily was nominated three awards but lost out to the Arctic Monkeys for Best British Album, to The Fratellis for British Breakthrough Act and to friend Amy Winehouse for the Best British Female award. When a fan at the after-party told Lily she should have won the latter award, she was overheard growling back: “I f**king know.”
- Corinne Bailey Rae has revealed she loved meeting Oasis’ Noel Gallagher backstage at the award ceremony. She explained to the Mirror: “I’ve got a real soft spot for him. I love the way he just gets on with it.”
- And Best International Female Artist Nelly Furtado had big love for the band too: “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Oasis. I bought my first acoustic guitar because of them and the first tracks I learned to play were Live Forever and Wonderwall. I was inspired by their working-class roots because that’s the kind of background I come from.”
