Keith Urban: Nicole Kidman was “extraordinary” during his rehab
Keith Urban has insisted that his slip back into alcoholism shouldn’t be taken as a sign that his marriage to Nicole Kidman is going badly.
Keith checked himself into rehab last October and stayed in the Betty Ford facility for almost three months until he thought he was strong enough to leave. He had previously gone through rehab for alcohol and cocaine addiction in 1998
He told Today’s Matt Lauer recently: “This disease of addiction, you know, it’s nothing to do with contentedness and happiness, because I had all of that. But I wasn’t doing what I should be doing to maintain the road I was on previously, so it was a big wake-up call to get back on the road.”
He reiterated that no one incident promoted his decision to seek help: “It was just time. I could see where it was going. It was coming at me in a way that was very apparent that this is not me, you know what I mean? I think anybody out there who is in this situation recognizes it’s not me, it’s something else.”
He added that he’s “really grateful for the support I got around me” particularly singling out his wife of less than a year: “They say grief makes hearts and closer bonds than joy ever can. We’ve been through a lot, and she’s been extraordinary.”
“I can’t really quantify it, because it’s not a soundbite what we’ve learned. But it’s really profound.”
