James McAvoy: judge Anne Hathaway as an actor not her accent
James McAvoy has defended the decision to cast Anne Hathaway as English writer Jane Austen in the new biopic Becoming Jane.
Anne and director Julian Jarrold have come under fire for casting an American actress in the lead role and while James admits the cricticism was “fairly expected”, he thinks people should look beyond nationality and accent.
He said recently: “I think you find the right actor - you don’t find the right accent - and she is undoubtedly brilliant.”
“When you find a British person playing JFK or some real big American icon, nobody bats an eyelid here. We don’t go, ‘This is terrible - it should be an American man playing this part’, so I don’t know why we get so annoyed.”

All right, then. She’s a dreadful actress.

I think that Anne Hathaway did fantastic as Jane. She and James McAvoy had a wonderful chemisrty on film. They had me thinking of the movie for days in my head. I hoped that they were a real couple. After, I watched Becoming Jane, I didnt want to go see Atonement with James in it with Keira Knightly. To me he will always be Anne Hathaways On Screen Man. I will also always remember him as Thomas Lefroy.

It’s so good to read an article with James McAvoy defending Anne in her difficult task of portraying one of Britain’s most beloved and acclaimed authors. I think Anne did a fantastic portrayal of Jane Austen having myself studied Jane extensively in college. She did a wonderful job with the accent. I think they made the right choice in casting her. The chemistry between Anne and James was incredible leaving me breathless throughout most of the movie. Would love to see them work together again.
