When does all this hogwash end?? How mean to imply Stern was up to no good when it was announced from the moment her death hit the internet and tv, that Stern was back at the place they had just recently purchased the boat. It was also confirmed that was where he was when he got the call to come back immediately.

Well jeewhiz , it seems awful strange that the woman that he said he loves was very, very sick and he left her and did not demand her to go to the hospital , he only used the woman for money , this is how he ran his life for the last ten to twelve years, mooching off of Anna and now he will try to mooch off of Little Danielynn ,well he already is .. Krista Barf one of his attorneys was on tv this morning stating he has recieved no moneys from E.T and what a big fat lie ,but not unusual from that pack .He hid it ,of course he would not put anything in his account because it might incriminate his a*s so he hid it in another country or in his wicked sisters account of parents but not in his . He will hide anything that might get him into trouble that is why he was so pissed that Ford Shelley took the PC . Lots of evidence . He is a total looser just like his attorneys etc..

I saw footage that was pulled off of one website, showing Anna Nicole all dressed up and she had dinner guests, one being Daniel, who looked to be around 14 to 15. Anna was handing him a glass of wine and then a Pina Colda. It later showed some man holding him as he staggered off with her behind. Maybe he was jealous of the baby. Who knows what kind of close relationship he had with his mother? I imagine that they will be questioning his girlfriend in a trial about drugs when this inquest comes up. As much as I have read I never saw any thing about the methadone being in Stern’s name too.
Speaking for some one who had a drug addict in their family. They will do any thing to get their drugs. It is well known to every body that Anna was the boss. People loved and tried to save Elvis Presley, but they would not tell him no. He, like Anna thought if it was prescribed by a doctor that it was okay to take it. Drug addicts do not care about side effects.
I actually sat today and thought about her. Still young and looking forward to happy times. She is dead. It is a sad situation. I just hope that the whole truth comes out.
I would be surprised if stern did this deliberately. I think he has been hanging around all this time to get her to love him, watching her go from man to man and finally to him. I think that he is dirty, just not how much. He did testify on TV in court that he accepted plane fare from Fla. to the Bahamas from E.T. Some one will profit big from letting them shoot the funeral. It has never said who.

You know what? I am sick of every body not really seeing this woman for what she was. A drug addict and a w***e! Stern was just as big a w***e as her. HER decisions got her son killed and they got her killed. Stern admitted in court that he had NO money and was living off of Anna Nicole, and she had not paid the first payment on the mortgage of a house she said was a (GIFT)Stern was just the patsy to keep Birkhead away from his daughter. I find it awfully strange that there are 7 life insurance policies with Daniel as the beneficiary and STERN following Daniel. Stern had been trailing after Anna for years and I think he was just a friend to him as her lawyer. All of this Bahama thing was just a way to keep the baby’s real father away from her. They knew that there was proof of her doing drugs while pregnant, was a good way for Birkhead to take custody of his daughter.
I hope the child gets to go be with her daddy who is NOT Stern. I hope the inquest turns up how Daniel got a hold of the Methadone that killed him. Since the only one prescribed Methadone was Anna, there is a possibilty that she either gave it to him or he got it at her house out of her refridgerator where it was found after Daniel died. He came through customs. He didn’t have it or they would have found it and I don’t understand why any doctor would prescribe some one both Lexapro & Zoloft at the same time. The kid was messed up by Anna and her life style.

I thought they also found prescriptions of Methadone with Sterns name on the medicine in the room ??? s**t is going to fly and Mr. Sterns did her and her son in . Daniel did not look like a druggy to me and I wonder what Daniels girlfriend (the one he broke up with ) has to say about Daniel , she would know what problems he was having .. Surely they questioned her . He never looked like he was spaced out to me ,he looked healthy ,more healthy than his mother did . Sterns was feeding her meds like she was a starving animal until it took it toll on her and killed her .I don’t care what Perper says ,those drugs have to have done something to her system..

The body guard is now saying that Stern was suppling Anna with drugs for months, and that his whole deameanor has changed since the day she died. The police have found some thing on the computer that was taken out of the house and some other things. They are saying “New Evidence.” It could be ruled a homicide or a suicide. It will all come out sooner or later. Right now just a lot of questions being asked. Perper knows the cause of death but is waiting to see what the evidence is before he tells. Could be a suicide note on the computer. Who knows?

Further more who ever did or did not give Daniel the drugs doesn’t matter. If that drug was in an alias that is a Felony. If Anna gave it to him or Stern it’s Wreckless Homicide. The whole truth will come out in the inquest. For a woman to take drugs while she is pregnant is totally irresponsible. That video of her with her face painted up like a clown was sick. She was 8 months pregnant during that tape, and in the WHOLE video that little girl that they were baby sitting for wanted them to call her daddy and Stern refused. That was pointed out in court too. Stern tried and succeeded in controlling her life. He has finally gotten what he wanted in the end. Or has he? He was exactly what the judge called him. AN ENABLER! Birkhead begged her to get help. Stern picked up the drugs for her. I’ve never seen any where in print that he ever told her to stop and was probably doing them himself. What Lawyer who had his on law firm would leave to be on The Anna Nicole Smith show for $12,000.00 a year? Whehn it came down to it, he had no money of his own and admitted in court that he was living off of Anna. If they could not pay the mortgage why was he out buying a boat and with what? He has had to borrow money from his parents to stay in Bahama’s. It’s Thursday March 8th. Why has the coronor not announced the cause of death? He already knew the first of the week 95% of what killed her. The other 5% doesn’t matter but should be in. I do feel sorry for her. I do.
This whole thing has been a nighmare and a joke. If she could have just gotten clean, I think that she could have been major. But at 39 and doing some D movie about Alien’s was a total joke. I think that she could have been much more than she was. I watched her TV show several times and it just disgusted me because half the time she was doped up, and talking to the people around her like dogs. I think that she was a beautiful woman to spite her fake breasts. The prettiest that I ever saw her was on her first Play Boy Cover. She was innocent back then. but she had already come from a bad life. Was she doomed from then? Yes I think so. I’ve seen too many drug addicts wind up , locked up or covered up.
I hope she found some peace.

Well, here we all sat with baited breath all week and now they are saying the autopsy results are being delayed, because of “New Evidence,” that the Bahamnian Police have turned over. Well how convienient.
The medical examiner, Dr. Joshua Perper, said the autopsy tests have been completed and were supposed to be released later this week. But the Seminole Police provided him with new evidence, he said.
Gary Bitner, a spokesman for the Seminole Tribe and its police department, said the evidence provided by the tribe was turned over promptly. Neither Bitner nor Perper would say what the evidence was.
“This is not delayed evidence this is just additional evidence that has come to light during the course of the investigation,” Bitner said.
Perper’s secretary said the autopsy would be released in the next week or two.
Smith died Feb. 8 after being found unresponsive at a Florida hotel. A day later, Perper released a preliminary autopsy that showed no immediate indication of a drug overdose and no sign of major external injuries on the 39-year-old former Playboy playmate and reality TV star.
Her death sparked several legal proceedings, including one over the custody of her infant daughter. Three men have stepped forward and say they are the baby’s father. A lengthy legal fight also ensued over who controlled her remains. She was ultimately buried in the Bahamas last week.
Telephone calls made by The Associated Press to attorneys for Smith’s boyfriend Howard K. Stern, mother Virgie Arthur and Larry Birkhead, who claims to be the father of Smith’s baby, were not immediately returned.

Howard K Stern I believe in my heart overdosed Anna and Daniel on drugs. Howard K Stern was to controlling of Anna. Howard is only thinking about the money that Anna Nicoles daughter will be getting. He is only in it for the money and always has been. That child needs to be taken away from him and handed over to the real father Larry. Howard is such a horrible man what gave him the right to take two people from being able to live. I hope that Howard pays for what he did. He should be in jail.

It didn’t matter, she was addicted to MULTIPLE drugs and was taking them and drinking on top of that. Every one knows that she has been hooked on Methadone for YEARS. I can’t believe that Stern would not even try to talk her into stopping. He wanted to be with her so bad, he let her do what she wanted to stay with her. I have never heard her say that she loved Stern or any body else, but Daniel & her new baby girl. There is no telling what will turn up in her when she gets older from these drugs that she was pouring into her body while pregnant. She was a major drug addict and she could not stop, even knowing that she was carrying a little life.
Her decisions got her killed and her son and STERN was an enabler! I just hope that during this inquest on Daniel’s death they are able to find out who he got the drug methadone, and gave it to Daniel. Anna was the only one that was on them, but it would not surprise me if Stern was not doing drugs too.

She was never a herion addict. She was hooked on pain pills and alcohol and went into the Betty Ford Clinic to kick that and said it was awful, and that she’d never go back there. This was on Larry King Live. She didn’t LIKE drugs SHE was ADDICTED to drugs, there is a big difference. She had drugs in alias names to get more. Birkhead said she would take double the dose prescribed. She left him because he would not enable her, especially while pregnant. She had been over in North Carolina sleeping with some rich man that birkhead introduced her to. She tried to tell that man that he was the babies father, until he told her he had a vasectomy. I’ve got news for HIM, those don’t always work! After she found this out then it was Birkhead’s again. Stern has wanted to be with her ALL of these years and she has been with many men. Stern tells on TV that Anna didn’t have a relationship with Birkhead, and then he proves it with these pictures of them together. She looked pretty in love to me. IF she knew what that meant. I still believe that this whole STERN relationship was a ploy to keep Birkhead from taking her baby away from her. She has been addicted to methadone for years and it works in the body like opiates. She wasn’t hung on anything to be taking Methadone while pregnant. When I see that video of her with the CLOWN painted on her face and she’s so spaced out she doesn’t even know what Stern means when he askes her had she been eatting magic mushrooms? She didn’t even know what it meant! BUT HE DID!
I don’t trust him and never will. He’s a lawyer, need I say more?

I’ve got your hernia.
I’m a writer & researcher, that’s what I do. At least I wouldn’t be stupid enough to say some one did drugs the way that she did because she “liked,” them! She hated doing them. She was an addict and could not stop. No addict “LIKES” doing drugs. Most would rather die with the next dose, because they hate it so much. No woman pregnant would do drugs unless they could not quit it. No woman would jeprodize their unborn child unless they could not help it. She couldn’t. It happens every day. The baby pays for it. It’s called DRUD ADDICTION & it kills!

There is a therapy for drug users during pregnancy but Sterns kept her supplied even when she was in the hospital , you heard Larry Birkhead talk about that , they ran him out of the room after he seen them adding more drugs to her because there was not enough coming out of the drips she was hooked up to.

Larry Birkhead, stated in court, that Stern would bring her drugs in the hospital, because what they would give her was not enough. You take enough pain pills and you become resistant to them & it takes moe and more. She was in rehab and Stern brought them to her. My speculation only is that he brought her methadone in to the hospital right after Dannielynn was born, and either she gave them to her son or he just got them, or worse case Stern gave them. The coranor knows what killed her and has since Wednesday. We won’t know for a few more weeks, because the police has found new evidence, and there is no telling what thart is, but enough to make him hold on on his announcement. I do not believe that Methadone is a drug that you give to a pregnant woman to get off drugs. that’s for heroin addiction, possibly cocaine. But she was taking so many. who knows. Just because they found to pills or tablets in the stomach doesn’t mean she didn’t take any.It could mean two different things. She had already injested the pills or she took drugs either through a vien or intramuscularly. (shot)
Time will tell.

Your right Katherine Ross . I have never seen such a mess in my life . She was a total loser and Sterns was as bad as her , they probably laid in around thinking of how to f–k people over to get what they wanted . She was disgraceful and should have had that child taken away from her at birth and they should investigate her son’s death immediately, it should have already been done . Just what kind of fricken pain does one have that they would need this much pain medicine ,what the hell did she have cancer, AIDs ,what . The methadone alone would create a mess with her breathing if she was being given too much and in her state of mind how much was too much , well as much as Stern delivered to her . Hey the parasite got rid of both Anna and the boy and now he still has a cash cow .. I wish they would move along and bring murder charges against Howard and get this thing rolling , s**t you cannot even trust the M.E. at this point and I feel they should bring one out of the area to go over all of the toxicolgy report for I would trust none of them ..

Dr. Perper knows what killed her. He is not saying because the police have found evidence. Maybe on the computer that was taken out of the house, the one with the incriminating photos of her and the Immigration Minister that resigned. She “buddied,” up to him to get a legal residence in the Bahamas fast. The thing that has puzzled me is this. If Stern had gone to purchase a boat what was he going to pay for it with? According to him in court under oath, “he had neither money nor any income.”
News media are now calling the house “her,” house when this other man claimed to own the house and that she had not paid the first penny on the mortgage. Why was she in Florida with out her baby in the first place and at a Hard Rock Hotel/Casino if she was so sick?
When a person is a drug addict and they take downers it slows down their system so much, that their lungs can not clean them selves out as fast as they normally do. Hence: Pneumonia. She was sick and they did say that she had pneumonia. She was on antibiotics and OVER the counter drugs. First off, you need to talk to a doctor if you plan on taking any over the counter medications. The woman was a methadone addict, and no telling what else she was hooked on. It was said they found Xanax in her meds too. The woman’s world was crumbling around her. She had a baby, lost her son just a few days later. Hormones change when you are pregnant and they change again right after birth. That can cause post partum depression. She had a baby by C- section, which is major surgery and was under anesthesia, plus I am sure once the surgery was over, she was given pain medication plus antibiotics for that alone. She could have had a blood clot in her abdomen, and it finally broke loose. Dr. Perper, said there were no signs of an overdose. Some thing killed her. It might not have been an overdose, but it could have been a major organ destroyed by the lungs. It could be pneumonia, people die from that all of the time. As long has Stern had been in her life, I find it interesting that he was never romantically involved with him until after the death of Daniel and the birth of Dannielynn. I think that it all boils down to, the baby not being Sterns and is Birkhead’s child. Or some ones child, but not Stern’s. Anna knew that because of her drug addictions that she could be proven an unfit mother and was afraid that Birkhead would get custody of the child. Birkhead said that he tried to get Anna not to take drugs while pregnant, and that she did it any way with no regards to her unborn baby’s health. When Birkhead put demands on Anna she didn’t like it and kicked him out through Stern who was always around and always doing her dirty work. He gave up his law firm to go be on her show for $12,000 a year. Stern slept on the couch while she had Birkhead living with her. I hate to say it about the woman, but she was LOOSE!
I’ve called her a w***e. I think that she was sorry person. I know that people get caught up in bad things, that come from bad homes and I think that is why she was like she was. NO one told her what to do. She did what she wanted and that is why I keep saying that the decisions that she made, got her son and her killed.
She wanted a new life, with a new baby, and she wanted to try and get past her son’s death. She wanted to be able to keep her baby with no problems and she knew the only way to do that was to go to the Bahamas. Research was done about the law there and who else but Stern could have found out the options? Every thing backfired on her. It’s going to be interesting to see the cause of death. It might just have been a suicide. This will take years to ever be final. Even after the cause of death, there is still a date set to investigate Daniel’s death. Who gave him the methadone that killed him? Etc. Maybe Anna did and she could not live with it. Who knows? We can guess all we want to but it will be revealed in time.
The reason that they have not started the inquest on Daniel’s death is because court dates have to be set and court issues are always booked and backed up. The chose a date that was open. If Anna gave them to him there is nothing they can do to her, but if Stern gave them to him it’s reckless homicide. If a doctor gave her pills under an alias, he/she could be charged with criminal negligence. We ALL will just have to sit back and wait and see!

Another thing interesting is this article on MSNBC. This Ginson man befriended Nicole on Stern. Gibson has a long term companion—–yet his X-Wife was the baby sitter of Dannielynn. Why is this family so all of a sudden in their lives???
Here is the article.
Smith, Stern build a life in the Bahamas
The story then shifted to the Bahamas, as Howard K. Stern was holed up there with little 5-month-old Dannielynn. We talked to many people who knew both Anna Nicole Smith and Howard K. Stern and knew about their life on this beautiful Caribbean island. Two very different images were painted of Howard K. Stern and whether or not he was the real father of Dannielynn. Some people we talked to were scared of Howard, telling us they often saw prescription drugs in heavy doses visible in some of the private rooms in the house he shared with Anna Nicole Smith. But we also got another impression from the Gibsons, a very well-known and well-respected family in the Bahamas, who were in a unique position. The father, Eric Gibson, befriended Anna and Howard and used to take them sailing. His longtime companion was the first person to find Anna Nicole Smith’s lifeless body in the Florida hotel room. His former wife, Mrs. Gibson, still babysits for Dannielynn and has been taking care of the baby since October.

Please review your previous entries. “Drud” (drug), “moe” (more), “medicore” (mediocre), “jeprodize” (jeopardize), etc. BoolooONTomkat stated that you were trying to prove your intelligence by continuing to highlight your assorted professions. Well, I think you provided evidence on the contrary (with such frequent misspellings). Wow, with such simple deductions, maybe “I” should work for the FBI….

So you decided to pick pepper out of fly s**t? I’ve got 4 things going on at one time when I am on here. You can’t go back and edit these, AS you should know!!!!??????
I know how to spell, I just can’t type that great. I don’t have the time to re-read what I am putting on here. A typo has nothing to do with IQ. One of the smartest men in the world with the highest IQ could not spell, but in my case, I’m not on my usual computer or email. My computer is being repaired, and I am using my husband’s.
Be sides that I was not replying to you, so why bring your self into this?
Why not trying looking up Nikola Tesla, or Kalil Gibran, or SAINT BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS VIRGIN, PATRONESS OF LOURDES—1844-1879
You might learn something.
Donna——-I don’t care about your opinion.

And further more if I was really concerned about spelling words correctly, I’d use this format….acceptable Several words made the list because of the suffix pronounced -êbl but sometimes spelled -ible, sometimes -able. Just remember to accept any table offered to you and you will spell this word OK.
accidentally It is no accident that the test for adverbs on -ly is whether they come from an adjective on -al (”accidental” in this case). If so, the -al has to be in the spelling. No publical, then publicly.
accommodate Remember, this word is large enough to accommodate both a double “c” AND a double “m”.
acquire Try to acquire the knowledge that this word and the next began with the prefix ad- but the [d] converts to [c] before [q].
acquit See the previous discussion.
a lot Two words! Hopefully, you won’t have to allot a lot of time to this problem.
amateur Amateurs need not be mature: this word ends on the French suffix -eur (the equivalent of English -er).
apparent A parent need not be apparent but “apparent” must pay the rent, so remember this word always has the rent.
argument Let’s not argue about the loss of this verb’s silent [e] before the suffix -ment.
atheist Lord help you remember that this word comprises the prefix a- “not” + the “god” (also in the-ology) + -ist “one who believes.”
B
believe You must believe that [i] usually comes before [e] except after [c] or when it is pronounced like “a” as “neighbor” and “weigh” or “e” as in “their” and “heir.” Also take a look at “foreign” below. (The “i-before-e” rule has more exceptions than words it applies to.)
bellwether Often misspelled “bellweather.” A wether is a gelded ram, chosen to lead the herd (thus his bell) due to the greater likelihood that he will remain at all times ahead of the ewes.
C
calendar This word has an [e] between two [a]s. The last vowel is [a].
category This word is not in a category with “catastrophe” even if it sounds like it: the middle letter is [e].
cemetery Don’t let this one bury you: it ends on -ery—nary an -ary in it. You already know it starts on [c], of course.
changeable The verb “change” keeps its [e] here to indicate that the [g] is soft, not hard. (That is also why “judgement” is the correct spelling of this word, no matter what anyone says.)
collectible Another -ible word. You just have to remember.
column Silent final [e] is commonplace in English but a silent final [n] is not uncommon, especially after [m].
committed If you are committed to correct spelling, you will remember that this word doubles its final [t] from “commit” to “committed.”
conscience Don’t let misspelling this word weigh on your conscience: [ch] spelled “sc” is unusual but legitimate.
conscientious Work on your spelling conscientiously and remember this word with [ch] spelled two different ways: “sc” and “ti”. English spelling!
conscious Try to be conscious of the “sc” [ch] sound and all the vowels in this word’s ending and i-o-u a note of congratulations.
consensus The census does not require a consensus, since they are not related.
D
daiquiri Don’t make yourself another daiquiri until you learn how to spell this funny word—the name of a Cuban village.
definite(ly) This word definitely sounds as though it ends only on -it, but it carries a silent “e” everywhere it goes.
discipline A little discipline, spelled with the [s] and the [c] will get you to the correct spelling of this one.
drunkenness You would be surprised how many sober people omit one of the [n]s in this one.
dumbbell Even smart people forget one of the [b]s in this one. (So be careful who you call one when you write.)
E
embarrass(ment) This one won’t embarrass you if you remember it is large enough for a double [r] AND a double [s].
equipment This word is misspelled “equiptment” 22,932 times on the web right now.
exhilarate Remembering that [h] when you spell this word will lift your spirits and if you remember both [a]s, it will be exhilarating!
exceed Remember that this one is -ceed, not -cede. (To exceed all expectations, master the spellings of this word, “precede” and “supersede” below.)
existence No word like this one spelled with an [a] is in existence. This word is a menage a quatre of one [i] with three [e]s.
experience Don’t experience the same problem many have with “existence” above in this word: -ence!
F
fiery The silent “e” on “fire” is also cowardly: it retreats inside the word rather than face the suffix -y.
foreign Here is one of several words that violate the i-before-e rule. (See “believe” above.)
G
gauge You must learn to gauge the positioning of the [a] and [u] in this word. Remember, they are in alphabetical order (though not the [e]).
grateful You should be grateful to know that keeping “great” out of “grateful” is great.
guarantee I guarantee you that this word is not spelled like “warranty” even though they are synonyms.
H
harass This word is too small for two double letters but don’t let it harass you, just keep the [r]s down to one.
height English reaches the height (not heighth!) of absurdity when it spells “height” and “width” so differently.
hierarchy The i-before-e rule works here, so what is the problem?
humorous Humor us and spell this word “humorous”: the [r] is so weak, it needs an [o] on both sides to hold it up.
I
ignorance Don’t show your ignorance by spelling this word -ence!
immediate The immediate thing to remember is that this word has a prefix, in- “not” which becomes [m] before [m] (or [b] or [p]). “Not mediate” means direct which is why “immediately” means “directly.”
independent Please be independent but not in your spelling of this word. It ends on -ent.
indispensable Knowing that this word ends on -able is indispensable to good writing.
inoculate This one sounds like a shot in the eye. One [n] the eye is enough.
intelligence Using two [l]s in this word and ending it on -ence rather than -ance are marks of . . . you guessed it.
its/it’s The apostrophe marks a contraction of “it is.” Something that belongs to it is “its.”
J
jewelry Sure, sure, it is made by a jeweler but the last [e] in this case flees the scene like a jewel thief. However, if you prefer British spelling, remember to double the [l]: “jeweller,” “jewellery.” (See also pronunciation.)
judgment Traditionally, the word has been spelled judgment in all forms of the English language. However, the spelling judgement (with e added) largely replaced judgment in the United Kingdom in a non-legal context. In the context of the law, however, judgment is preferred. This spelling change contrasts with other similar spelling changes made in American English, which were rejected in the UK. In the US at least, judgment is still preferred and judgement is considered incorrect by many American style guides.
K
kernel (colonel) There is more than a kernel of truth in the claim that all the vowels in this word are [e]s. So why is the military rank (colonel) pronounced identically? English spelling can be chaotic.
L
leisure Yet another violator of the i-before-e rule. You can be sure of the spelling of the last syllable but not of the pronunciation.
liaison Another French word throwing us an orthographical curve: a spare [i], just in case. That’s an [s], too, that sounds like a [z].
library It may be as enjoyable as a berry patch but that isn’t the way it is spelled. That first [r] should be pronounced, too.
license Where does English get the license to use both its letters for the sound [s] in one word?
lightning Learning how to omit the [e] in this word should lighten the load of English orthography a little bit.
M
maintenance The main tenants of this word are “main” and “tenance” even though it comes from the verb “maintain.” English orthography at its most spiteful.
maneuver Man, the price you pay for borrowing from French is high. This one goes back to French main + oeuvre “hand-work,” a spelling better retained in the British spelling, “manoeuvre.”
medieval The medieval orthography of English even lays traps for you: everything about the MIDdle Ages is MEDieval or, as the British would write, mediaeval.
memento Why would something to remind of you of a moment be spelled “memento?” Well, it is.
millennium Here is another big word, large enough to hold two double consonants, double [l] and double [n].
miniature Since that [a] is seldom pronounced, it is seldom included in the spelling. This one is a “mini ature;” remember that.
minuscule Since something minuscule is smaller than a miniature, shouldn’t they be spelled similarly? Less than cool, or “minus cule.”
mischievous This mischievous word holds two traps: [i] before [e] and [o] before [u]. Four of the five vowels in English reside here.
misspell What is more embarrassing than to misspell the name of the problem? Just remember that it is mis + spell and that will spell you the worry about spelling “spell.”
N
neighbor No wonder many speaking Black English say “hood” for “neighborhood”—it avoids the i-before-e rule and the silent “gh”. If you use British spelling, it will cost you another [u]: “neighbour.”
noticeable The [e] is noticeably retained in this word to indicate the [c] is “soft,” pronounced like [s]. Without the [e], it would be pronounced “hard,” like [k], as in “applicable.”
O
occasionally Writers occasionally tire of doubling so many consonants and omit one, usually one of the [l]s. Don’t you ever do it.
occurrence Remember not only the occurrence of double double consonants in this word, but that the suffix is -ence, not -ance. No reason, just the English language keeping us on our toes.
P
pastime Since a pastime is something you do to pass the time, you would expect a double [s] here. Well, there is only one. The second [s] was slipped through the cracks in English orthography long ago.
perseverance All it takes is perseverance and you, too, can be a (near-)perfect speller. The suffix is -ance for no reason at all.
personnel Funny Story (passed along by Bill Rudersdorf): The assistant Vice-President of Personnel notices that his superior, the VP himself, upon arriving at his desk in the morning opens a small, locked box, smiles, and locks it back again. Some years later when he advanced to that position (inheriting the key), he came to work early one morning to be assured of privacy. Expectantly, he opened the box. In it was a single piece of paper which said: “Two Ns, one L.”
playwright Those who play right are right-players, not playwrights. Well, since they write plays, they should be “play-writes,” wright right? Rong Wrong. Remember that a play writer in Old English was called a “play worker” and “wright” is from an old form of “work” (wrought iron, etc.)
possession Possession possesses more [s]s than a snake.
precede What follows, succeeds, so what goes before should, what? No, no, no, you are using logic. Nothing confuses English spelling more than common sense. “Succeed” but “precede.” (Wait until you see “supersede.”)
principal/principle The spelling principle to remember here is that the school principal is a prince and a pal (despite appearances)–and the same applies to anything of foremost importance, such as a principal principle. A “principle” is a rule. (Thank you, Meghan Cope, for help on this one.)
privilege According to the pronunciation (not “pronounciation”!) of this word, that middle vowel could be anything. Remember: two [i]s + two [e]s in that order.
pronunciation Nouns often differ from the verbs they are derived from. This is one of those. In this case, the pronunciation is different, too, an important clue.
publicly Let me publicly declare the rule (again): if the adverb comes from an adjective ending on -al, you include that ending in the adverb; if not, as here, you don’t.
Q
questionnaire The French doing it to us again. Double up on the [n]s in this word and don’t forget the silent [e]. Maybe someday we will spell it the English way.
R
receive/receipt I hope you have received the message by now: [i] before [e] except after . . . .
recommend I would recommend you think of this word as the equivalent of commending all over again: re+commend. That would be recommendable.
referred Final consonants are often doubled before suffixes (remit: remitted, remitting). However, this rule applies only to accented syllables ending on [l] and [r], e.g. “rebelled,” “referred” but “traveled,” “buffered” and not containing a diphthong, e.g. “prevailed,” “coiled.”
reference Refer to the last mentioned word and also remember to add -ence to the end for the noun.
relevant The relevant factor here is that the word is not “revelant,” “revelent,” or even “relevent.” [l] before [v] and the suffix -ant.
restaurant ‘Ey, you! Remember, these two words when you spell “restaurant.” They are in the middle of it.
rhyme Actually, “rime” was the correct spelling until 1650. After that, egg-heads began spelling it like “rhythm.” Why? No rhyme nor reason other than to make it look like “rhythm.”
rhythm This one was borrowed from Greek (and conveniently never returned) so it is spelled the way we spell words borrowed from Greek and conveniently never returned.
S
schedule If perfecting your spelling is on your schedule, remember the [sk] is spelled as in “school.” (If you use British or Canadian pronunciation, why do you pronounce this word [shedyul] but “school,” [skul]? That has always puzzled me.)
separate How do you separate the [e]s from the [a]s in this word? Simple: the [e]s surround the [a]s.
sergeant The [a] needed in both syllables of this word has been pushed to the back of the line. Remember that, and the fact that [e] is used in both syllables, and you can write your sergeant without fear of misspelling his rank.
supersede This word supersedes all others in perversity. As if we don’t have enough to worry about, keeping words on -ceed and -cede (”succeed,” “precede,” etc.) straight in our minds, this one has to be different from all the rest. The good news is: this is the only English word based on this stem spelled -sede.
T
their/they’re/there They’re all pronounced the same but spelled differently. Possessive is “their” and the contraction of “they are” is “they’re.” Everywhere else, it is “there.”
threshold This one can push you over the threshold. It looks like a compound “thresh + hold” but it isn’t. Two [h]s are enough.
twelfth Even if you omit the [f] in your pronunciation of this word (which you shouldn’t do), it is retained in the spelling.
tyranny If you are still resisting the tyranny of English orthography at this point, you must face the problem of [y] inside this word, where it shouldn’t be. The guy is a “tyrant” and his problem is “tyranny.” (Don’t forget to double up on the [n]s, too.)
U
until I will never stop harping on this until this word is spelled with an extra [l] for the last time!
V
vacuum If your head is not a vacuum, remember that the silent [e] on this one married the [u] and joined him inside the word where they are living happily ever since. Well, the evidence is suggestive but not conclusive. Anyway, spell this word with two [u]s and not like “volume.”
WXYZ
weather Whether you like the weather or not, you have to write the [a] after the [e] when you spell it.
weird It is weird having to repeat this rule so many times: [i] before [e] except after…? (It isn’t [w]!)

thank you for the excuses, and for saying you didn’t care about my opinion then submitting a pseudointellectual English lesson. I’m sure the world thanks you as well. I don’t have time to say anything further.
