Elton John on his 60th birthdayElton John celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday with a celebrity-packed party on Saturday night then a gig at Madison Square Garden for 20,000 fans on his birthday itself yesterday.

Elton attended the Saturday night party at St John the Divine Cathedral in Manhattan with partner David Furnish and was joined by celebrity friends Liz Hurley & Arun Nayar, Sharon & Ozzy Osbourne, Little Britain’s Matt Lucas and David Walliams, fellow musicians Jon Bon Jovi and Lulu, and an assortment of Hollywood stars such as Robin Williams, Kiefer Sutherland, Michael Caine and Whoopi Goldberg.

According to inside sources, the church was filled with thousands of flowers but for once, Elton wasn’t looking equally extravagant, leaving Liz Hurley (and her cleavage) to be the focus of attention: “We were expecting Elton to wear something wild. Maybe he has gone more conservative now is 60.”

“All eyes were on Liz. Her outfit looked a bit like a wedding dress but it only just held her assets in place.”

On Sunday, Elton took to the stage at Madison Square Garden, after an introduction by former President, Bill Clinton. Bill told the audience: “Thank you for coming tonight to help celebrate Elton joining my favourite club, the 60-year-olds’ club.”

“I love it every time he plays. He reminds me we’ve all got a little bit of juice left. Elton has given us enough just from his music — there’s nothing quite like it.”

During the three hour show, Elton chatted with the audience, saying at one point: “I knew I had done 59 shows at Madison Square Garden and I said the only place I want to be is New York City on my 60th birthday.”
