Angelina Jolie urges for more funding to help orphans overseas
Angelina Jolie has urged politicians to put more money into helping children, particularly orphans, in developing countries.
Speaking at a press conference announcing the launch of fundraising group Global Action for Children, Angelina said: “I am here to simply ask you to think about orphaned children not as a burden but as a great opportunity.”
“Their education is an investment in our future. … They have had to work very, very hard to survive, but when they are given a chance, they grow strong, stronger than most. … The Lost Boys of Sudan are a great example.”
“I feel very fortunate to have orphan children in my home.”
When asked if she had any plans to get involved politically or run for elective office to push for greater funding, Angelina smiled and said: “I surely don’t think anybody here wants that. [My focus remains] in the field.”
Earlier in the day Angelina, along with GAC director Jennifer Delaney met with leading figures at the US State Department to discuss aid for children’s groups overseas. The GAC hopes to increases US funding for orphans in developing countries by $2.5billion per year.
