Paris Hilton to appeal sentence - and re-hires her publicist, Elliot Mintz
Paris Hilton’s legal team are set to appeal against the socialite’s jail sentence - and she’s re-hired longterm publicist Elliot Mintz to deal with the attention during the month leading up to her jailtime.
Paris’ lawyer entered a one-page notice of appeal on Friday shortly after the sentence was issued, with further papers being filed yesterday but an appeal won’t be automatically granted. Even if the team is allowed to appeal, legal experts think she’s unlikely to be successful, calling her chances of winning “a long shot”.
It’s also unlikely that Paris will benefit from the early release programme for non-violent offenders used to ease overcrowding in Los Angeles jails. Lost star Michelle Rodriguez was released after serving just 2 hours of a 60 day sentence under the programme last year but given the Judge Michael T Sauer order that Paris is not allowed to negotiate an alternative form of punishment.
A spokesperson for the LA Sheriff’s office confirmed that the judge’s order has excluded Paris from that programme: “It’s our understanding she is most likely going to do 45 days.”
Regarding Mintz, Paris’ parents reportedly had dinner with the publicist last night to discuss pulling him back into Team Hilton then accompanied Paris to the ‘Sober Day USA’ event at the Paramount Studios later in the evening.
Elliot is thought to have been fired on Friday after miscommunicating information from Paris’ attorneys to the heiress, causing the confusing over the suspended license. He has since apologised for the error and told People magazine that he “completely understood” her decision to dump him in the immediate wake of the sentencing, even after years of working closely together.
Speaking at yesterday’s event, he told Us Weekly that despite confirming the split himself in a statement over the weekend, “the rumors of our professional separation were overexaggerated”.
However, a source told the New York Daily News that the decision to welcome him back into the fold wasn’t based on his years of good service: “It’s purely out of desperation, as many other publicists have turned Paris down.”
The source added that Paris is very hard to represent because: “Paris just can’t be trusted. Taking anything she tells you at face value is a mistake.”
“This girl will never admit any responsibility. She blames her publicists, her mother blames the judge, but when will Paris finally admit she has some responsibility?”
