A source told People magazine: “They have broken up. But they have broken up and gotten back together at least 10 times before. I don’t know if this breakup is permanent, but for right now they are broken up.”

The couple have been practically inseparable over the last few months - especially for big events - but Jessica arrived in Cannes this week without John because John’s not into “movie events”.

The source added that despite Jessica being in France, she and John have “been emailing and talking to each other at least six times a day. I’m sure they’ll get back together.”

Jessica, who is at the film festival to announce her new film Major Movie Star, refused to discuss the rumours on Friday. Speaking at a promotional event on Friday night, she said: “I am very happy, but I don’t really want to talk about my personal life tonight because it’s not what it’s about. But I am very happy. I will let you know that.”

The reason for the split differs depending on the source. One friend of the couple’s blamed Jessica’s love of the limelight, telling Extra: “I believe John asked Jess to think about what was more important to her - partying or their relationship.”

But another source told Us Weekly that the split is “more of a cooling down” than a full-on break-up: “The same sense of excitement and interest just isn’t there as much. I have no sense of a tearful breakup or anything like that. It’s just losing steam. It is more of a separation.”
