Bill Nighy admits to David Beckham adoration
Bill Nighy has revealed he’s a huge fan of David Beckham and was devastated when David was dropped from the England national team after the World Cup last year.
Bill said recently that he wrote to David about it all: “I wrote to David to say I thought it was unfortunate he was no longer part of the England set-up. I had a bee in my bonnet. Let’s just say I was confused by the decision and I thought I’d like to disassociate myself from it.”
“It got on my wick. I’m passionate about football and I think he’s the most exemplary man, a wonderful athlete and a beautiful footballer. In my view he’s plainly sometimes undervalued. He was very sweet and sent me a signed No23 Real Madrid shirt.”
“He also gave me an open invitation to any LA Galaxy game. He must get more mail than the Pope. So I reckon that was pretty good.”
He added: “I love the way David Beckham plays football. He’s got a kind of elegance about him. If you were in an aeroplane flying over the stadium and you just saw the way he collected the ball you’d know it was David Beckham.”
“I’m always slightly uneasy about patriotism but certain things make me obscurely proud and David Beckham running the Real Madrid team for two seasons was one of them.”
“Particularly when Michael Owen was there and you’d see a perfectly flighted ball over the top from David with Michael slotting it away. There is a part of my English heart that used to tremble.”
