Los Angeles County’s Sheriff Lee Baca has said he’s not pleased with Paris Hilton’s plans to stage manage her entry into jail to maximise publicity.

Paris is thought to be planning to start her jail time at Century Regional Detention Center tomorrow morning - rather than Tuesday which was the latest date she could submit herself - in order to maximise exposure in the weekly tabloid magazines.

Baca told the LA Times: “Paying a debt to society should not be an element of her celebrity. Her occupation is publicity, but no one should profit in jail.”

He said it was unclear whether Paris would surrender herself at the courthouse where she was given the sentence or whether she would go directly to the prison but either way, authorities would not allow her to “be seen in handcuffs … or in the back of a police car, forlorn and in handcuffs.”

Mobile phones with cameras and other photography equipment has been temporarily banned from the facility for the duration of Paris’ stay and staff have been threatened with disciplinary action if they are seen trying to snap the heiress. But with the first photos of Paris inside expected to sell for around $500,000, low-paid staff might be tempted to cash-in.

Baca added that while Paris will be kept in a “special needs” section, separated from the general population of the prison, she should not expect particularly “special” treatment: “[She will] experience her incarceration as all other women will experience it. She won’t get better food, she won’t get different lockup time or a different environment.”

“Jails are not circuses and not places where ‘fun’ is the priority. Jail should be a corrective learning experience.”

Paris is expected to keep a diary during her sentence for publication after her release.
