“Fragile” Paris Hilton won’t appeal against return to jail
Paris Hilton will not appeal against the judge’s decision to send her back to jail for the remainder of her 45 day sentence.
In a statement issued through her legal team yesterday, Paris said: “Today I told my attorneys not to appeal the judge’s decision. While I greatly appreciate the Sheriff’s concern for my health and welfare, after meeting with doctors I intend to serve my time as ordered by the judge.”
“This is by far the hardest thing I have ever done. During the past several days, I have had a lot of time to reflect and have already learned a bitter, but important lesson from this experience. As I have said before, I hope others will learn from my mistake.”
After Friday’s hearing, a distraught Paris was taken from the court to the medical unit within the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in central Los Angeles instead of being returned to the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood as thought.
The “medical reasons” cited for Paris’ original reassignment to house arrest have been rumoured to be everything from schizophrenia to an unnamed (but painful) sexually transmitted infection, to panic attacks brought on by claustrophobia.
Her stay at the Twin Towers Facility is believed to be a temporary measure, with Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesperson Steve Whitmore explaining the facility used to “stabilize inmates, so they can be released into the regular [jail] system. It’s a facility focused on medical needs. It treats both medical and psychiatric conditions.”
Paris is said to be in a four-bed room but is being kept on her own, with a guard posted outside her door at all times. Sources have described her as “fragile”, “sullen and withdrawn” but receiving “appropriate medical attention” including psychotropic medication. Reports differ as to whether she is eating and sleeping at all since her return from home but sources that report she is say she is only doing it to avoid being transferred to the mental ward of the facility if she continues to deteriorate.
A former inmate of the centre told People magazine that it wouldn’t be a surprise if she’s unable to sleep in her new location: “You can’t sleep in there. All night and day people are screaming and crying.”
In related news, the Mail on Sunday is claiming that Paris’ reassignment to house arrest on Thursday may have been related to her grandfather’s financial contribution to Sheriff Lee Baca’s election campaign.
Financial records show that William Barron Hilton donated $1000 - the maximum allowed by law - to the campaign, with a friend of the family telling the newspaper: “this may have been payback time. Her entourage initially were confident she would be out of jail in a few days.”
