I was looking at the photos of Paris Hilton’s release from jail this morning and couldn’t work out why she looked so odd in them.

She’s supposed to have lost 10lbs while behind bars and I realise losing that amount of weight when you’re already pretty svelte could have quite an impact but didn’t think it was that.

Then I realised: she’s smiling. Actually, genuinely smiling.

I can’t remember the last time in photographic memory that we saw her smiling like that - and unlike some pouters who look goofy when they smile, it actually made her look prettier than normal. The subtler make-up and generally more nature look might have helped too.
