Parker Posey: I was labelled a freak because I wanted a life
Parker Posey has revealed her ambition to do something different with her life marked her as an outcast when she was growing up in Mississippi and Louisiana.
She told OK magazine recently: “I wanted to leave the South when I was 11 years old. I was a ballerina, and I just knew I wanted to do something.”
“I didn’t want to grow up and get married and have a family at the age of 18 or 21. I wanted to do things.”
“It’s very different down South where you have more of that. I’m from Monroe, Louisiana, and you’re kind of a freak when you actually want to do something with your life. It’s a little like ‘who do you think you are?’ Which was really odd to get that envy from people my parent’s age.”
She still gets questioned about her love life and whether she has any plans to start a family whenever she goes back to her hometown: “I get a little like ‘are you seeing anyone?’ and I’m like ‘Well, I’ve been really busy, and I’ve dated. I’ve had boyfriends.’”
“It’s very different. We have such a strong paradigm for marriage and what that means in our culture. Americans are so obsessed with success in your career, in your love life, but how full is your life? It’s about self-awareness.”
