Lindsay Lohan: facing six months in jail and the end of her career?
Lindsay Lohan’s DUI arrest on Tuesday may land the actress up to six months in jail and end her Hollywood career, according to various commentators.
Lindsay is expected to appear in court late next month in relation to her Memorial Weekend arrest - and later the same day, for this week’s charges. As a first time offender at the time of the May incident, she would have been likely to have been put on probation rather than receive a custodial sentence - but according to legal experts, this week’s events are likely to land her some jail time.
Lawrence Taylor, a top DUI defense lawyer, told the AP while the time could be as much as 180 days if she is convicted of both DUIs and drug possession: “I would say this woman’s going to be doing at least 30 days .. I would strongly suggest … that perhaps this woman needs rehab rather than a long stretch in jail.”
Lindsay has already been through rehab twice this year - at Wonderlands in January and Promises after the May arrest - but another defense lawyer, Barry Gerald Sands, explained: “Silk-sheet recovery homes don’t do the job.”
“Whatever you have done in the past, do a 360-degree turn and go the other way. She has to change her alleged friends, people sharing or selling her drugs. She has to lead a clean and sober life.”
Lindsay was said to have checked into a third, undisclosed, medical facility on Tuesday after the arrest but it might not be enough to save her reputation in Hollywood.
Her new film I Know Who Killed Me is set to open today but is only set to open on 1200 screens (compared to the 4000+ for the Simpsons Movie) after a promotional plans were abandoned in the face of Lindsay’s arrest: she cancelled a Tuesday night appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the film has not been screened for critics or had a red carpet premiere. Production of comedy Poor Things was also abandoned last month after Lindsay checked into Promises.
Hollywood talent manager Bernie Brillstein told the New York Times: “I hope they put her in jail for as long as they can. Maybe she’ll realize how serious it is. I believe she’s uninsurable. And when you’re uninsurable in this town, you’re done.”
However the director of Lindsay’s break-through films Mean Girls and Freaky Friday has urged Hollywood not to give up on her just yet. He told People magazine: “Unlike other celebrities in the news going to jail, she’s actually somebody who has got verifiable talent and actually good at what she does.”
“I think eventually, because she is good, she will get around to working again. She’s still so young. She’s only 21.”
But he even wouldn’t work with her at the moment: “I’m certainly not going to be seeking her out until she gets her personal life in order.”
