Amy Winehouse treated at hospital for “severe exhaustion”
Amy Winehouse’s spokesperson has confirmed that the singer was rushed to hospital yesterday morning suffering from “severe exhaustion”.
Amy was taken to the University College Hospital in London in the early hours of Wednesday morning after collapsing at the home she shares with husband Blake Fielder-Civil.
An onlooker at the hospital told the Sun that Amy was in a “real state” when she was brought in by Blake and a female friend: “She was falling over and stumbling around. She didn’t look well at all.”
“They came in and went straight up to the reception desk. Her friends looked really worried about her.”
“[Blake] because she couldn’t really stand on her own. Her girlfriend was doing all the talking and the receptionist seemed to be listening very carefully.”
“That’s when I realised Amy must have been really ill because although there was a big crowd of people in the waiting area, she was rushed straight through. A nurse came over and helped Amy into the main part of the hospital.”
A hospital insider told the newspaper that Amy then had her stomach pumped and was given an adrenalin shot before being discharged later in the day.
A source close to the star told the Mirror that friends are worried it’s more than simple “exhaustion”: “Everyone’s worried that she’s dabbling in drugs. She’s been hitting the bottle in an incredible way lately and has lost so much weight.”
“She has been cancelling gigs left, right and centre and it’s not great for her professionally. She is having a tough time lately and has just cracked. The gigging, the drinking, that car-crash lifestyle… but with Amy, no one can tell her to look after herself.”
“She’s not the kind of person who listens. She is brilliantly talented and at the top of her game but the pressure is immense. She can’t help herself going into dark places.”
But another friend told the Mail that the incident might be enough to force Amy to reevaluate her life: “Amy got a massive fright when she was hospitalised and is finally coming round to everybody’s pleadings with her to go to rehab.”
“She now realises she may need help as her lifestyle finally take its toll. She’s currently discussing the best plan of action with close friends and family.”
The spokesperson for Amy’s record label Island/Universal added that “all scheduled performances are now postponed”.
