FT Blog: Christian Slater on the London stage
Christian Slater was my big teen crush in the early-mid 1990s (I’m 28 now) so the 13 year old in me won’t let me express any particular disrespect towards him but I suspect he’s moved (back) to acting on the stage because he can’t land decent movie parts these days.
After stepping into his hero Jack Nicholson’s shoes for …Cuckoo’s Nest in 2004, he’s now taking Kevin Spacey’s part in the stage adaptation of Swimming with Sharks - I seriously doubt he’d even get an audition for film remakes of those - he’d be competing with bigger names who are, frankly, better film actors.
Given the aforementioned teen crush, I think it’s a shame that he’s not a huge star in Hollywood any more but those shows will probably sell out - so I guess he’s made the right move. My friends’ crushes from the time are all still in the limelight - Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and to a lesser extent, Keanu Reeves & comeback band Take That - while Christian’s career has suffered. And my very first crush, Corey Haim, is doing a reality show with Corey Feldman - perhaps I’m a curse!
I still think Christian might have a John Travolta-style comeback in him though - if he lays off the Botox (his unwrinkled forehead makes it looks like his facial features are shrinking and migrating to the centre of his face) and continues his efforts to not become a caricature of himself.
(And just for the record, the 13 year old in me giggles every time I write an article about Christian - or Bon Jovi, who were my musical obsession - that 13 year old is doing her dream job right now!)
Do you think Katie Price's marriage to Alex Reid will last?
