FT Blog: Britney at the VMAs

Meh.

I can’t put my finger on it what it is but there is something about last night’s performance (and the same with the M&Ms ones earlier in the summer) which looks really amateur. When I think “Britney Spears“, I think amazingly polished hair & make-up and impressive, equally polished choreography because, particularly when she’s lip-synching, that’s what she’s really all about. Forgetting the quality of her weave, her hair just looked limp and untidy, and the bra/boy-short combo just looked utterly tacky and without style, especially when compared to say, Rihanna’s almost equally revealing stage outfit. Rihanna looked styled and professional while (again like the M&Ms gigs) Britney looked like a 13 year old girl dressing up in what she thinks is sexy for a school talent show. It isn’t.

And the performance itself? I could bust those moves with as much enthusiasm as she did - and I’d probably look half as uncomfortable as she did.

Perhaps we should give her the benefit of the doubt though - perhaps she had something amazing worked out with Criss Angel (as she was reportedly planning) and it had to be pulled at the last minute, and this was the replacement. But as promoted as it was, she should have cancelled rather that do that lacklustre effort. I suspect this will hurt rather than help her comeback efforts.
