Courtney Love: I know how to play the game now
Courtney Love has said after a turbulent twenty years, she finally knows how to play the fame game.
Since moving to Los Angeles in 1987, Courtney performed in bands and had bit roles in films before starting grunge band Hole in 1989. Over the next 18 years, she developed and battled a number of drug addictions, numerous arrests and court-imposed rehab, in addition to becoming a widow after Kurt Cobain’s suicide and giving birth to their daughter, Frances Bean.
Courtney told USA Today recently that she won’t repeat her earlier mistakes when she releases her new solo album later in the year: “I know how to play the game now. I have to navigate the system, follow the rules and stop being a rebel. I can’t afford to be a 43-year-old rebel.”
After money troubles including personal bankruptcy at one point, she is currently researching, through books and conferences, ways to make herself more financially secure: “I’m really just a Beverly Hills soccer mom who wants to be a real estate mogul and design clothes.”
She added selling CDs and touring don’t earn sufficient money for most female artists - hence the fondness for celebrity fragrances and fashion lines. She too is considering her own perfume but after her recent outburst over Steve Coogan’s involvement with Owen Wilson’s suicide attempt, doesn’t think the time is right for it just yet: “No one wants to smell like Eau du Controversy.”
