Hugh Grant surprised a group of students at the University of St Andrews by turning up at a house party.

Hugh had been playing golf nearby with other celebrities in the Dunhill Links Championship but initially shunned the official 19th hole events in favour of the student bash.

Hugh is said to have spent about two hours at the party and was photographed kissing and flirting with a number of girls.

One of the partygoers told the Sun: “He was lapping up the attention and he was quite drunk. It came across as a bit sleazy - sort of like [his Bridget Jones character] Daniel Cleaver.”

“He was asking the girls questions about who stayed where, and at one point he joked: ‘Who lives in this hovel then?’ He chatted to me and others about normal stuff, like what degrees we were doing.”

“It was weird being in this small room with 10 to 15 people and Hugh Grant sitting on the sofa looking kind of creepy. Nobody could quite believe he had come to a student party.”

As the party wound down in the early hours, Hugh invited three of the girls to accompany him to another party at the Old Course Hotel. One of the girls told the Sun: “It was about three or four in the morning by then but we went anyway. He bought us all champagne. We spent more time talking with him.”

“Then he said he was going to the bathroom and we didn’t see him after that. We were trying to find out if he went off with someone for the night, but I don’t think he did.”

Hugh was the first celebrity to party with students in the town: his fellow golfer Bill Murray made a surprise appearance at a party last year but he didn’t indulge himself quite as much as Hugh - instead he was spotted washing up dirty glasses and dishes.
