Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis: music helped us get over child acting shame
Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis has said being in the band has been cathartic for her and guitarist Blake Sennett.
The former couple both had their first taste of fame as child stars - Jenny in a number of small roles in TV shows and films, including most notable The Wizard and Foxfire while Blake had a recurring role in teen sitcom Boy Meets World - but are both now glad to have left acting behind in favour of music.
Jenny told the Sun recently: “I think we share a feeling of shame about the child acting.”
“It brought us together because we were not proud of the work but the work we’ve put out since as songwriters we are proud of.”
“It helped us come to terms with our past and has informed the song-writing. A lot of child actors go on to have a bad rep.”
The band’s new album ‘Under the Back Light’ was released in August and Jenny is pleased about it’s new, more polished sound, even if some of their fans are not so happy: “When anything people hold dear changes, that can be a shock”
“I know that it’s going to annoy some people, but ultimately you have to play music for yourself.”
