Liz Hurley ducked out of £1000 donation promise, claims parish
Liz Hurley has enraged a Gloucestershire parish after renaging on a promise to donate £1000 to church funds.
Liz and husband Arun Nayer made the promise after local vicar Rev John Partington carried out a blessing as part of their wedding celebrations in March this year.
The couple were married in a small civil ceremony in Sudeley Castle on the Friday before an extravagant blessing in the chapel in the castle’s grounds on the Saturday. The pair were expected to make the donation to the parish in the weeks following the wedding but instead have now opted to a dozen hand-embroidered kneeling cushions for the chapel itself.
Parish treasurer Sue Williams said recently: “We were expecting a cash payment which we could have used for some urgent work to be done in our main church.”
“We hoped that her goodwill would be forthcoming with cash. But it hasn’t been. It strikes me as rather mean especially as I understand most of the wedding was paid for by a magazine.”
A second unnamed parish source told the Daily Mail: “It has left a bad taste in our mouths. St Mary’s Church at Sudeley Castle rarely gets used and already has sufficient kneelers. Cash would have been better.”
The more diplomatic Rev Partington added: “We are very grateful for the kneelers, and I’m sure they will look lovely when they arrive. The chapel is only used three or four times a year, but I’m sure there are people who will want to kneel there.”
