Britney SpearsBritney Spears attended her first parent counselling session with ex-husband Kevin Federline yesterday.

In addition to the hands-on parent coaching that takes place during Britney’s visits with her sons, the court-ordered counselling is intended to help the former couple work better together as parents, including working on communication techniques.

The two-hour meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel yesterday was the first of their three joint counselling session and they will each take three individual sessions “to address specific parenting issues” afterwards.

A source told People magazine that while she’s reportedly had problems with the coach during her monitored visitors, Britney had a different outlook for the counselling sessions: “She’s not nervous, she’s actually looking forward to it.”

A second source told Us Weekly: “Britney is actually really excited about seeing Kevin. She sees this as the first step in them getting along for the sake of the kids.”

In related news, it’s been suggested that Britney is having problems sleeping and might be suffering from narcolepsy after she was spotted with an anti-sleep drug Provigil in her handbag on the way into the hotel.

A neurologist told Us Weekly that the presciption drug wouldn’t affect her ongoing drug testing: “This medication won’t give you a ‘high,’ like a stimulant would.”

“Unlike a traditional stimulant with side effects such as hyperactivity and inattentiveness, the primary effect of this medication is only to help keep you from falling asleep.”

“Somebody who is living a celebrity lifestyle, who frequently has to be up very early one day and then very late the next, could develop very disordered sleep patterns.”

The drug is also experimentally used to treat cocaine addiction and ADHD.
