Claire Danes grateful for fashion advice at 17
Claire Danes has said she’s thankful that fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez advised her to cover up for the 1995 Academy Awards ceremony because the outfit Claire had selected herself was inappropriate.
Claire was invited to the ceremony in 1997 after starring in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and she first picked out a revealing dress - only for Rodriguez to pick out a stylish cashmere top and skirt instead.
Claire said recently: “At 17, girls are so confused about sex. Maybe they’ve just started to have it, and they think full exposure is what they’re supposed to aim for, and, of course, it’s not. So I wanted to be sexy for the Oscars!”
“And Narciso said: ‘No, you’re a girl. You should look age-appropriate.’ It seems pretty fundamental, but it was important for me to hear that at the time.”
Claire recently donated $7500 to educational projects with Donors Choose as part of the blog Tomato Nation’s Fall challenge after the fundraiser, Sarah Bunting, pledged to re-enact the infamous sidewalk dance scene from My So-Called Life dressed in a giant tomato costume.
