While it’s not entirely unpredictable, it’s rather disappointing that Pete Doherty has seemingly returned to his old ways so soon and been videoed injecting heroin.

There is a chance that it might have just been a one-off thing - like the ex-smoker who sparks up at a particularly stressful moment or the vegetarian who eats a bacon sandwich during a particularly vicious hangover. Of course that doesn’t necessarily excuse it but even with heroin, there is a possibility that this was just a one-off lapse and he’ll steer clear in the future.

If it wasn’t just a one-off thing though, he’s right to say it’s just a matter of time before he gets arrested again - and with his suspended jail sentence and probation, he’s likely to end up in prison.

Some media outlets have been calling for him to be sent to jail without waiting for a further arrest since just taking the drugs is already a violation of his probation. I’m sceptical about whether jail is the answer though - he’s been in jail before and it didn’t change anything, and he knows he’s been potentially facing jail now and still he was knowingly filmed injecting (he looks directly at the phone camera at the start of the video). But of course, his attempts at rehab haven’t exactly worked yet either. It’s a tough one - but I hope that the powers that be (the magistrates in this case) continue to apply logic and reason to the situation instead of just jumping on the reactionary bandwagon.
