Fametastic Review of 2007: People of the Year
Number 5: Miley Cyrus
Hannah Montana might has started in 2006 but it’s come of age in 2007, especially with the sell-out Best of Both Worlds Tour. And more importantly for the gossip world, Miley has started her transition from child actress to bonafide teen star - she turned the big 1-5 this year and started working red carpets, the chat show circuit and having boyfriends. Expect to see a lot more of Miley in 2008.
Number 4: Vanessa Hudgens
Similarly, Vanessa made the transition from the Disney Channel to Hollywood’s teen elite this year - mostly because we saw everything there is to see of her. Her nude snaps may have divided fans but without a doubt, they pumped up her status outside of the High School Musical world. Her high profile relationship with HSM co-star Zac Efron and refreshingly normal attitude - and resistance to adopting the standard blonde clone look - have also help set her on the course to true stardom.
Number 3: Hayden Panettiere
2007 has also been a great year for Hayden Panettiere: in the first half of the year, Heroes got properly bedded in (before it got crap in Season 2) and she has become a paparazzi favourite for looking constantly cute as she runs her errands around Hollywood. She seems to be avoiding the temptation of size zero and adamant about resisting the lure of the partying circuit so looks like Lindsay Lohan should look - fresh and healthy. Hurrah for another positive Hollywood role model.
Number 2: Amy Winehouse
It’s been a year of two halves for Amy: the first six months or so were all about her fantastic album, ‘Back to Black’, with little tidbits and rumours about her personal life - then completely vice versa for the rest of the year. She started the year with boyfriend of nine months, Alex and claiming that while she could be somewhat self-destructive, she generally had a handle on her drinking but then she split from Alex, got back together with ex-boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil - then married him in May. August saw her rushed to hospital after a drug overdose and after a little back-and-forth with rehab, she has been dodging drug problem rumours and breakdown stories ever since. November saw husband Blake arrested and remanded to jail, and despite ongoing critical acclaim for her music, she had to abandon her UK tour on medical advice after a series of difficult performances. 2007 might not have been a great year for Amy but it sure has been a busy and noteworthy one for the star - and she deserves to be a “person of the year” because, as Victoria Beckham and Karl Lagerfeld say, she is an icon (style and musical) in the making. Let’s hope she makes it.
Number 1: Victoria Beckham
Between the move to Los Angeles and the Spice Girls comeback, it really has been the year of the Posh. At the start of 2007, after a few years in exile in Madrid, Victoria looked like her Queen of the Tabloids position may be usurped by younger WAGs like Coleen McLoughlin or Alex Curran - but then David Beckham signed a $250million deal with the LA Galaxy soccer team and Brand Beckham went truly global. The family’s arrival in California in July received unprecedented coverage from the mainstream media in the US and for a few months, the constantly designer-clad mum was everywhere - fashion shows, the school run, A-list soirees - but not the gym. Just as all the attention started to die down, the Spice Girls got back together for a comeback tour, with VB at the centre of the action, and Victoria’s position as tabloid royalty on both sides of the Atlantic was firmly established. All hail Queen Victoria.
