Amy Winehouse will be required to appear in court in Norway in order to her appeal her recent drug conviction in the country.

Amy and husband Blake Fielder-Civil were arrested in Bergen in October during Amy’s European tour after staff at their hotel reported the scent of marijuana coming from the couple’s room.

Police found 7.1grams (0.25oz) of the drug in their suite and after 12 hours in jail, the couple - along with a third unnamed man - were released after paying fines of $500.

However, after being released from jail and finding that the charge would cause her problems with her US work visa, Amy claimed she did not understand the statement she signed as it had been written in Norweigan and she was not told that paying the fine would be considered a guilty plea. Bergen police insist that Amy had a translator with her at all times and she was fully aware of what she was signing so the case with have to go to a formal appeal.

A spokesperson for the Bergen police force said yesterday: “I can confirm that she must appear in court.”

“If one appeals a conviction, it’s the rule that one has to appear in person, so this is not surprising.”

Amy reportedly hopes that the case is cleared up before February so that she can appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony, where she is up for six awards. She is also bailed to return to an East London police station in March regarding her involvement in Blake’s alleged trial-fixing case.
