Britney Spears to argue against conservatorship extension
Britney Spears is reportedly expected to appear in court in Los Angeles today to challenge her dad’s request to extend his conservatorship over her.
Jamie Spears and estate lawyer Andrew Wallet were granted control of the star’s assets when she was hospitalised late last month and are due in court around 1:30pm local time (around 9:30pm UK time) today to request an extension to the order, which is set to expire today.
Under the conservatorship, Britney has been banned from driving her car, talking on her mobile phone and spending her own money without permission. She has also been restricted from travelling - she isn’t allowed to leave California - and has to have the conservatorship’s permission before meeting friends.
Aside from the odd shopping trip or visit to the Millennium Dance Studio for rehearsals, Britney has largely stayed in her Studio City home since being released from hospital late last week and when she has been able to contact friends, she’s been telling them that she’s bored.
A source told OK magazine: “Basically, she’s grounded. And dad’s got the keys to the car and the batteries to the remote control. Britney’s not digging it much. This is a girl who’s been calling the shots, and firing anyone she doesn’t agree with since the time she could drive.”
“Going back in time, with a 10pm curfew, and the adolescent position where she has to get permission from her parents so her boyfriend can come over for dinner, is not how she normally rolls, to say the least.”
Sources claim Britney is planning to appear in front of Commissioner Reva Gertz at the Los Angeles Superior Court to argue that she is capable of looking after her own affairs but legal insiders don’t think it’ll go well.
One legal source told People magazine that Commissioner Gertz is likely to extend the order to allow Britney time to recover properly: “She’s getting proper medical care and has professional security. The chaos has been removed from the situation.”
UPDATE: The Commissioner has ruled that the co-conservators will maintain control until at least 10th March. A hearing will take place on that day to decide whether or not it shall be extended a second time. Jamie Spears’ attorney Jeryll Cohen added that the co-conservators have still not been able to formally issue Sam Lufti with his restraining order to keep him away from Britney. The singer did not appear in court herself.
