Stars in Hepatitis A scare after Ashton Kutcher’s birthday party
Celebrities who attended Ashton Kutcher’s 30th birthday party in New York earlier in the month have been urged Hepatitis vaccinations after a staff member was hospitalised due to the infectious liver disease.
Ashton and wife Demi Moore were joined by celebrity friends including Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Liu, Liv Tyler, new mum Salma Hayek and Demi’s ex-husband Bruce Willis for the party at Socialista in Manhattan on 7th February. However, a bartender working at the club that night was hospitalised earlier this week and found to be suffering from Hepatitis A.
Cross-contimination is unlikely but guests attending the event to have a gamma globulin injection just in case.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issued a statement today, saying: “In response to a case of Hepatitis A in a bartender at Socialista in Manhattan, the Health Department today notified patrons of the exposure and urged them to get a hepatitis A vaccination as a precautionary measure.”
“Hepatitis A is spread by putting something in one’s mouth (even though it might look clean) that has been contaminated with traces of fecal matter from an infected person. Any patron who visited the establishment after 8pm on February 7th or 8th, or after 10pm on February 11th (the times the infected person worked after becoming infectious), is considered to be at risk and needs a preventive shot.”
The symptoms of Hepatitis A, a viral liver disease, are often mistaken for the flu as they include fatigue, stomach pain and nausea, and once symptoms appear, the only real treatment path is bed rest. However, unlike its counterpart Hepatitis C, Hepatitis A does not cause permanent liver damage.
