Oscars 2008: Julie Christie wear a “Close Gitmo” ribbon on the red carpet
Julie Christie didn’t just accessorise her maroon ruched dress with a pair of strange pink gloves - she wore an orange ribbon supporting the campaign to close the prison camp in Guantanomo Bay.
The Away from Here star explained: “It’s the American Civil Liberties Union campaign to close Guantanamo (Bay), so it’s a very, very important issue… It’s affecting the whole world.”
The orange is a reference to the coloured jumpsuits inmates have to wear at the camp. Around 775 people have been held at the detention facility since 2002, although around 420 have now been freed. Of the remaining prisoners, US officials expect to put between 60-80 on trial and free the rest. Conditions at the facility have been criticised by various governments and NGOs including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch as well as the ACLU.
