Demi Moore: I didn’t care about Ashton Kutcher’s age, I cared about my family
Demi Moore has said she was surprised how much fuss was made over the age difference between her and now husband Ashton Kutcher when they first got together, because it was one of the last things on her mind.
The couple began dating in 2003 when Ashton was 25 and she was 40 and while many commentators said it wouldn’t last, they have now been married for over two and a half years.
In a recent family interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Demi explained: “People made such a fuss about it, you would have thought the world had never seen it before.”
“Age wasn’t what I was thinking about, but to the rest of the world it was a very big deal.”
Demi was more concerned about whether he could deal with becoming a step-dad to her three daughters from her previous marriage to Bruce Willis: “I didn’t bring somebody into their lives lightly.”
“I looked at Ashton and thought, He’s 25 [he’s now 30]; it’s a lot to ask.”
“Being with me isn’t about just being in a relationship with me; it’s about someone stepping into a situation where there is already a huge level of responsibility.”
Ashton admitted that he was a little reluctant: “At first, I didn’t know how it was all going to play out, but everything fell into place.”
“We all support each other. I’m occasionally overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity.”
“I am eternally grateful for having them in my life. That makes me want to cry and hug them and cry a little bit more.”
Youngest daughter, 14 year old Tallulah Willis added that she finds it stranger now than she did then: “I was in fourth grade, so it didn’t hit me as much as it did [older sisters] Scout and Rumer. But it still hit me a little, and it still does now. I find it weird that people think my stepdad is hot.”
