Suzanne ShawDancing on Ice winner Suzanne Shaw has revealed she was on the verge of bankruptcy just after giving birth to son Corey.

Suzanne shot to fame in 2001 on the Popstars talent show and her subsequent pop career in Hear’Say then worked in musical theatre after the band split up in 2002.

However, when she became pregnant by then-boyfriend Darren Day in 2004, she had to give up her stage career and their debts began to mount up, especially when Darren left her and Corey.

She told Hello! magazine recently: “It seems like a fairytale. When I split with Darren and he declared himself bankrupt a short while later, he didn’t have any money to give me.”

“I was told by four different debt advisors that I had no option but to go bankrupt - I had debts of £200,000 - but I refused. I didn’t want to have a lifetime of bad debt following me and was determined to do anything to make ends meet and claw myself out of the situation.”

“I literally crawled on my hands and knees on the floor, hiding, when bailiffs came knocking at my door. Sometimes I would give them £100, just to keep them off my back, against a £30,000 debt, but more often than not I didn’t have any cash to hand over.”

“At one point my mum Janet, who was living in New Zealand, had to order food parcels - including milk for Corey - from a British supermarket website and have them delivered to me. I went without food so Corey could eat.”

“I was too embarrassed and proud [to ask for help from others]. It’s bad enough always being described as the woman dumped by Darren Day and left holding the baby, never mind revealing the desperate straits I was in.”

After winning the ice-skating talent show earlier this month, Suzanne is expected to earn around £1million this year through magazine and endorsement deals and have already signed a six figure deal as a lingerie model for Ultimo’s Michelle range at Asda. She has also settled down with a new partner, radio DJ Jason “JK” King.

She added: “I had two years of bad luck. It was hard but I’ve come through it stronger and so grateful for what I now have.”
