Duffy is frequently referred to as “former shop worker Duffy” and just about every article I’ve ever read about Aygness Deyn refers to her previous job at a fish and chip shop even though Duffy was a gigging musician and Aygness was working as a professional model for a few years before they both hit the big time.

I guess it’s a way to make them seem “normal” and to link into the currently very popular idea that anyone can be the next chart-topper or the next supermodel. But I don’t think they go far enough.
