Kylie Minogue on her uncertainty about announcing cancer
Kylie Minogue has revealed she nearly didn’t publicly announce her battle with breast cancer.
The singer told Paris Match recently that she had long arguments with her management team over whether or not she should come clean about the illness as some of her advisors thought it would damage her career: “I’d be lying if I said all of my management were in agreement.”
But eventually she decided that she had to go public, announcing the news in May 2005, and said she was overwhelmed by the support she received: “I remember one day in Paris during my treatment when I was in a cafe on the corner - and at the time I was really glad if I could make it as far as there. A young man approached me and gave me a rose. He said simply: ‘Be brave. We’re thinking of you’.”
“There’s also a song on my album called Stars which says that ‘the stars don’t just shine in one place’. I wanted to say that because even in the darkest moments, there’s always beauty and light.”
“When I was in hospital with people I’d never met who had my life in their hands, we were able to laugh together, even in terrifying situations.”
But she added that even though the disease is currently in remission, she’s still worried it might return: “It’s not over. I still go for regular check-ups. The ‘voyage’ doesn’t end suddenly. That’s why it’s so difficult to talk about it.”
“[But] it’s wonderful to know that in talking about it, I’m perhaps helping women, families and also some men with breast cancer.”

I think illness has temporarily hampered her career - it burst the magical princess bubble she had created around her charismatic and eloquent performance persona. It’s to be admired she’s not airing out her dirty laundry about it, as Madonna would. I’m sure in time, people will come round to her and as in her song Stars which she mentions, we’ll ‘find life and all of its graces’. If anything, I think a newer, resilient and even more considered and mature Kylie is emerging - life begins at 40. For everything that Kylie was before illness, she will forever be referenced by having breast cancer now. Who’d have ever have thought. . . . .
