Uma Thurman back in the courts in a battle with Lancôme
Less than a week after a jury found the former mental patient Jack Jordan guilty of stalking and harassing the actress with letters, phone calls and emails, Thurman is involved in a new court case, this time with cosmetics giant Lancôme.
The French cosmetics company is counter-suing the actress to stop her from trying to sue them for $1 million.
Thurman claims that Lancôme is using old adverts on Asian web sites and a Canadian billboard without her permission, long after she stopped being the face of the “Miracle” range, and have therefore gained a great deal of free advertising without her knowledge.
Lancôme are denying any wrong doing and want the court to rule that they did not breach her contract and therefore do not have to give her the $1 million she claims to be entitled to.
When filing the suit in Manhattan’s Supreme Court, a representative of Lancôme said that the company never “knowingly or intentionally” used Thurman’s image and that the Web pages were “inadvertently archived” and never meant to be publicly available.
A lawyer for Lancôme, Peter Raymond, defended the company, claiming that, “[Lancôme] pulled the pages off as soon as they found out about them, they didn’t even know they were there.”
38-year-old Thurman, who has appeared in films such as Kill Bill & My Super Ex-girlfriend, was the face of Lancôme between 2000 and 2005, in a deal that earned her $5.8 million for the first two years of the contract and $3.1 million for two further option years.
When commenting on Lancôme’s counter-suit, Thurman’s lawyer said: “Obviously, the French have decided they won’t even try to resolve this amicably, so they have filed this sneak attack.”
Raymond replied that Lancôme is “always amenable to settling.”
