Angelina Jolie: new film role reminded me of my mum
Angelina Jolie has said she enjoyed making new film The Changeling because her character reminded her of late mother, Marcheline Bertrand.
In the Clint Eastwood-directed film, Angelina plays Christine Collins, whose 9 year old son is kidnapped. After the boy is returned to the family by police, Christine claims he is not her son and to cover up for their mistakes, the police brand her an unfit mother and have her committed to silence her protests.
Speaking at the period film’s press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, Angelina said regarding her character: “To me, she’s very much like my mother. My mother was very passive in many ways and very, very sweet, but when it came to her children, she was a lion.
“So in many ways, Christine reminded me of my mom, and it was a way to kind of revisit my mother after her passing and spend time with her.”
She added that the character was also difficult to play because of her own mothering experience: “To lose a child: I can’t imagine anything worse, especially not knowing the fate of that child.”
Marcheline died from ovarian cancer in January 2007. Angelina and partner Brad Pitt are set to welcome their fifth and sixth children into the world this summer.
